Faulty Stator/Pickup coil ?

Well in a follow on from my previous thread i have now re wired the hyosung which me and my fiance purchased as her 1st bike.... There is still no spark, i have tested the plug on my ktm 640 lc4 and it sparks so i know the plugs not faulty, i also checked the ignition coil for resistance and that came up between the approximate values according to the service manual, i tested the lead wires from the pick up coil and the figure is rather a lot lower than in the service manual, following on from this i turned the bike over and across the wire that connects to the CDI i believe this to be the wire that tells the cdi when to make the coil spark... I set the multimeter for AC voltage and turned the bike over and there was nothing at all.... until i depressed the start button then it jumped up and it does this every time i stop turning the bike over... allegedly the bike has a new CDI well a second hand one from what i can make out.... Just wondering if it sounds like the pick up coil is not working. I have taken the side casing off and checked for obvious signs of damage but it all looks fine to me no breaks in the wires or signs of damage, the 3 yellow wires that go to the regulator rectifier tested fine for resistance and whe the engine is turned over all generate a current when tested on AC voltage...

By your description you have just checked the alternator not the pick ups.

unfortunately i'm not an expert Crying or Very sad

but from what you've said i think that your probably right to think that its the pulser coil. i've had pretty much the same experience on my little GS, only its the CDI thats not giving me good results. i did the same test on the pulser coils and got good readings so i'd be persuaded to look more into that area.

Aye i checked the pickup coil / pulser coil wires and there is no current at all except when you depress the starter button which is what makes me think pulser coil... well i hae ordered a new stator assembly hopefully that wil be here in a da or 2 so on sunday i can try that Smile

Im normally quite confident with electrical diagnosis but this one i cant really commit as i only just got hold of the bike and hae not heard it run...

ah well fingers crossed the stator assembly and hopefully it is the pulser coil Smile

failing that CDI next Smile

And i tested the generator wires aswell as the pulser wires to see if there was a possibly break in the whole bunch of wires...

orite good luck to ya mate, let me know how you get on. seems you have the exact same story as me, ie.bought non runner bike that previous owner says "yeah, i imagine it'll be an easy fix, i just dont have the time", BOLLOCKS! although luckily for me i found a second hand cdi cheap enough, hopefully it'll last. Laughing

What bike is it you have exactly, i'm not sure if you mentioned it?

i am a bit confused though, you say you only get a voltage when you press the starter button? do you have a kick start aswell? unfortunately i dont know much about what it should do when you depress the starter button as my wee suzuki is not blessed with one haha Laughing

, so all i know is that when i kick it over i get a voltage on the multimeter when one probe is on the wire from pulser coil and the other on the earthing point, seemed to work fine.

Im not getting a current when connecting the probe to the pulser coil wire and the other to the earth which = nothing... just ordered a kick starter for it as it does not have one fitted but does have the shaft for it Smile

Been a very long time since i worked on a little 125 forgot how much fun it is cant wait to get it running then my fiance will have to fight me to get the keys for it Razz

wasn't sure if you meant this but there shouldnt be any voltage from the pulser coil untill u turn it over.

Woot i was right new stator assembley fitted, put it all back together and 1st press of the button it fired up, n i have to say im quite impressed it runs pretty sweetly just gotta set the carb up and a few little jobs like fork seals to go and its MOT time heehee
