My first off-road...Off

was going to post in the offroad forum but its mostly experienced riders and topics accordingly, anyway, im new to biking so whatever!


Since getting my 04` Yamaha DT 125 RE awhile back I've been out on a couple of green lanes just learning, i'll never forget the first time i hit the power band - I'm sure the dep pipe and reed valve adjustedment helped towards to massive jump in power - but wow, it feels like it doubles in acceleration.

Anyway, since then i havent had enough spare funds to get it road legal, cbt, insurance, mot etc since i took it to a local garage and it ending up costing over £500 instead of the qouted £200. The garage has a good reputation and they all seem top blokes, it was just a bad situation i guess - the new starter motor was £280 instead of the £80 they qouted.

The bike bump started almost immediatly with a slowish jog so it wasnt NEEDED, but whatever it's done now.

Enough of the background...

I've been taking the bike out for short stints over the fields outside my house, just a mile or so and then back home since it's not road legal. Gaining more confidence time and I'm smart enough to ride within my limits.

Thats where i went wrong - i took it out early afternoon, all was fine. Then i took it out about 8pm just before dusk and unknown to me due to my stupidity or sheer niavity, the grass had turned very wet.

As usual, accelerating out of a corner over some slight ruts before a steep climb - instead this time the ruts, acceleration and wet grass took me out and there i was watching the bike sliding along the ground at speed.

Seeing as i'm not road legal, i wasnt wearing proper trousers - lesson learnt, im sitting here in unbelievable pain! My only advice to anyone new is get the proper kit before you ride, however tempting it is to just hop on and go.


I'm more concerned about the bikes state than my own at the moment The bike is made solid and tough, all i can see is scratched plastics and rear brake lever bent - the worrying thing is a thin pipe going into the top of the clutch is movable now, i can pull it in and out. I think it was just my paranoia hearing the engine sound change riding it afterwards.

Anyway, my lesson to anyone riding without the proper kit - GET IT!!! No doubt i will foolishly ride again without it because its going to be months before i can afford it but i'll definitely take it slower.

we make mistakes mate - and thats a first rate way to learn.
i have had numerous 'offs' when im on my YZ but its all part of the fun for me because i dont have to use her on the road! i have my drz for that.

i say get back on her and ride till she screams again...
