Hi Guys,
Abit of a grey area on advice but...
the basic rundown is that i have a 125 engine (nearly new 08) in my garage... and ive seen a 250 of the same bike for sale cheap with a foooked engine.
If i put the 125 engine in it (takes about 2 hours to do, stright forward swap)
how/what does it require to re-register it as a 125cc and have it ready to ride?
Both the engine and bike are CLEAN with numbers/papers etc...
MOT? Engineers report? VOSA? VIC?

Please only reply if you know for sure... ive had all kinds of replies from people ive asked who are clutchin at straws lol
Cheers Very Happy

There is a section in the bikes V5 where you put in the new details and pop in the post to the DVLA. obv if its insured tell them too.

I dont own the bike yet... but i own the engine.
Just want to buy this bike with the knackered engine so i can sell it on...
So it wouldnt require an MOT or VOSA check to see if its been done properly etc...???

Like i said, when you buy the bike and complete the work, fill in the section on the V5 that is change of engine. Done.

Hi

As above, but there is a catch. As going from a 250 to 125 engine will drop it into a lower VED group the DVLA are likely to want some proof. This might well just be a signed letter from a dealer saying they have checked it is now a 125.

Also insurance might be a pain, and an insurance company might require an engineers report.

All the best

Keith

No problem. The DVLA have to know, there is space on the V5c for it.

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

* a receipt for the replacement engine
* written evidence from the manufacturer
* an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
* written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

So the engine isn't clean with numbers/papers then?. You may be looking at a VOSA and/or Stolen Vehicle Squad referal/check unless you've got some paperwork to show the engine's origins. You'll see a lot of imported bikes with "not stated" for engine number on their V5s but that was when the DVLA couldn't be arsed to type a Vin number AND an engine number for a fresh imported bike, they dig a bit deeper for alterations such as yours.

Hi

It is also entirely possible to have an engine without engine numbers. For example the old Moto Morini V Twins never had them from the factory and they were stamped in the UK. Any old ones imported now won't have an engine number.

All the best

I wasn't talking about bikes with no numbers but ones that did have engine numbers and were never put on by DVLA, I've had 3 USA imports in the past all the same.
Don't think there are "loads" of Japanese greys with no stamped engine numbers..... unless they've been ground off Mr. Green

Quite a few Japanese market bikes never had an engine number stamped on the cases.

All the best
