Anyone know if there is a penalty for holding your plate on with velcro? What would happen if a traffic copper saw it?

Makes it stupidly easy for someone to nick your plate.

I bet it will fall off within a week. Velcro with glue all over it. Whack it on and never worry.

Unless you are planning the whole having several different plates made up so you can choose to be Matthie, or Dave, or Jim or whoever legally owns each plate Wink

Planning on using plently of strong stuff, shouldn't fall off. It's more for incase the situation ever arises where I need to rip off my plate...

If you're going to do that then why bother even fit a plate?

Also, what are you going to do with the plate once you rip it off?

Police will just go back and get it from where you dumped it.

My opinion is that this isn't a good idea. The best idea would be one of those actual plate flipper things.

If you drop your plate in the process of taking it off then you're fucked.

Friend of mine had a plate attached by velcro to his 636, was very secure and could handle speeds of 150+.

Just as illegal and more easy to spot because the flipper mechanism is on show.

The ultimate would be to somehow adapt some of that liquid crystal privacy glass. Add a layer of it to your plate or something hooked up to a switch on your bars. Riding normally, power is sent to the plate making it visible, then at the flick of a switch you can kill the power and the plate gets obscured. Would be a bit expensive though mind. Prob cheaper just to pay the fines.

Why not just take it easy? I've been riding for ten years and I've never been caught speeding on a bike. Speed cameras are dead easy to spot, and you just have to keep an eye out for Jam Sandwiches.

If you can't spot a speed camera ahead of you then what is to say you will spot the old lady stepping out into the road or a car pulling out on you...

You can get away with an awful lot on the UK roads without having amazing identity hiding devices or removable numberplates as long as you are taxed insured and licensed, and you keep your eyes open.

I had mine on velcro and forgot to put it back on after cleaning the bike. I was stopped by a copper, "Just to let you know your plate's fallen off". He checked the ownership by the vin-plate. He also mentioned the velcro, just seemed interested.

I was thinking about doing this aswell, my only thought was if they spotted it then having fake screw heads might not help your case. Laughing

It's not really for speed cameras, more for incase if you were out on a hoon and ended up in a chase (obviously you would have to make sure they hadn't seen your plate before you rip it off). Not planning on using it if I don't have to, just think it would be nice to know that if you needed to, you could hide your plate.

Around Newbury is getting more and more dodgy with police, there's 2 traffic cars that patrol around together (I was pulled by them the other night, all they wanted to check was that I had a full licence because I was carrying a pillion, their cars automatically check mot, tax and insurance I believe). There is also at least 3 unmarked cars going around, watched one of them light up behind some rudeboys the other night going up 'the link'.

It's pretty easy to tuck a plate in your jacket.

What is the point in getting into a chase if you are 100% legal?

You may as well stop and take the points and the fine. Its not worth the risk TBH. Plus, the police aren't supposed to chase you on a motorcycle in case they cause an accident, so all they do is take your plate and trace you through that. The only way to know that you aren't going to get caught is to ride without a plate at all!

There's no point unless its for trackday purposes or something.

I wouldn't go looking for a chase on purpose, I have been pulled quite a few times.

What about if you went past a traffic car going the other way at licence loosing speeds by accident, wouldn't you prefer to be able to rip your plate off and go for it? (They would probally call the chase off pretty quickly.)

Umm? Confused

I know why... it's because there has never been many traffic coppers around newbury untill recently so there's alot of 'done up' rudeboy cars going around. They are cracking down on it now, saturday night just gone past they had a crack down in the town centre catching all the cars 'cruising' through town, pulling over any dodgy looking cars into the bus station and going over them.

One of the new spots for the traffic coppers to sit is on the way up the link, just after the slight bend so you can't see them sitting on the vedge till you are doing 120+. Shame really because the link even has a bridge at the top which the first under wins. Laughing

The police also arent supposed to beat us up at protests....but they still do...

You may be 100% legal but if youve been out on a run and ventured even above 100mph it could be bad news if you have the feds behind you.

And you think its safer to pull over and pull your plate off? If you do it at speed you're just as likely to drop it in the path of the police car than to successfully remove it and hide it. Once you remove the plate the police have a reason to throw the book at you. If you keep the plate on they are more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Its a stupid idea IMO. Plus traffic cars in the UK can't judge oncoming speed so as long as you slow down as soon as you see the police car they can't do anything except give you a warning.

I can honestly say I've never been pulled over on a bike in ten years, so you must be doing something to arouse suspicion. Maybe they got wind a bloke fitting your description was driving on a cloned plate?

I *might* consider taking some kind of anti identification action if I had nine points on my license, but if you've got a clean license what is the point?

Explain how you reach license loosing speeds by accident, are you saying your not in proper control of your vehicle? Wink

Lol. Most people would say that riding at silly speeds "is just wrong" and that you could kill someone.

Matthie wrote:

Then just pin it! If your doing "licence loosing speeds" then they aren't going to be able to stop, turn around and catch you!
