So what causes tankslappers?I that vid it seems that the front wheel lifted and came down not in line with the direction the bike was moving. But other vids are not as clear.

How do you avoid Tankslappers?

If you watch the video carefully, both of his wheels leave the floor and he lands on an angle to the direction the bike is travelling with just his rear wheel.

When the front wheel lands, still at an angle, it causes the back end to try and go in the opposite direction, he corrects by countersteering which makes the bike wiggle in the other way and it happens over and over again.

Avoid it? Tankslappers can happen if you save a lowside, where the back end grips up while turning although in that case it usually turns into a highside. See here.

I was taught to just grip the tank with your legs, countersteer and just keep revving in a situation like that, don't know if it's the best advice but I've had near lowsides in which gripping the tank, countersteering and revving the bike corrected. Point being if you just drop the revs, the back end grips and throws you, whereas if you rev and drag the bike back under you, it grips more naturally.

Feel free to correct me if I am completely wrong! Thumbs Up

Tankslappers are caused by the rear wheel trying to re position itself in-line with the front. This causes the front wheel to move direction and then the rear wheel will try and compensate again. All this happens very fast resulting in violent shaking.

It can also happen if your rear wheel is not aligned correctly but not as violent.

I'm guessing some form of metal protection or something. Never heard of bike boots with steel toecaps though! Laughing
