Nothing will happen in most cases. Personal experience was that i was advised that my black visor did not conform to the the regulation dictating the transmission of light (biker who stopped me in his panda car when I had my dad as pillion when i shouldn't have - long story and I did well to not get done without driving in accordance to my license, purely because of the circumstances - dad had full license anyway which entitled pillions).

He just made a passing comment and that was that. When i got pulled for speeding last summer, copper made no mention about my dark visor, plate, race can or the fact i was blaring metal out of my headphones.

By law, tinted visors must transmit 70% light to be road legal. But I always ride with dark visors even in rain since it takes away the reflective sheen on a damp road.

I usually have my spare clear under my back protector so i just whip that out. Only takes 10 seconds to change.

If I dont, then i ride with my visor up. That's usually in town anyway where I ride with my visor up since speeds rarely go above 50.

Wear my illegal iridium visor on my illegal helmet on my illegal bike all the time.

So far, nothing's happened. Plods drive past without even registering.

As for consequences, I think it's a fine.

Also, I thought it was 50% of light to be legal?

i dont think i have ridden with a clear visor in about a year and a half now. ride about at night all the time too, the black visor isnt that great for visability on my marushin helmet but the dark one on my shark is good enough to use at night if its dry.

do at least 5 or 6 hundred miles a week and so far i have yet to be pulled over let alone asked about the visor.

so basically nothing will happen, however if your pulled over for lets say speeding, no tax, no insurance, no mot etc then they might just add the visor in to make you suffer a bit more.

I think its down to the officer and the time of day ( common sence).

Put it this way if you get pulled for something else and act like a di@k you might get a ticket for the visor..

Saw quite a few bikers earlier when it was dark with tinted visors, so who cares. Very Happy

Never had problems with my dark visor yet including stopping and talking to officers at a road accident, just be sensible and keep a clear one on you if possible.

Dorset Bikesafe includes a Theory Night (woohoo) and the dark visor was mentioned in relation to an accident where a guy had been to Poole Quay Bike Night and forgotten to take his clear one, rode back in the dark with dark visor and had an accident. In this case it's a problem, if you're safe and it's bright day light I understood the Police would probably turn a blind eye. Got to ask yourself why you're being stopped in the first place, but doubtful it would be due to a dark visor alone.

Perfectly legal, provided.

A. They permit a minimum of 70% daylight.
B. They are not used beyond Dusk (ie when the street lights go on.)

Helmet visors must not be tinted to the extent that there is less than 50% of AVLT and they must bear the BS 4110:1979 or ECE Regulation 22.05 markings.

Also I've attached the last set of ACPO Guidelines that I am aware of...

Correct it is 50% and not 70% as I previously stated, but when I looked at my notes again You can wear tinted visors at night provided they permit 80% ambient light.
