I'm thinking of buying my first set of leather soon (always worn textiles until now) but having looked on the internet lately, the prices seem to be ridiculous; I've seen them going for from £700 up to £,1200 on some sites. I know I'm being uber-lazy as there are bike shops at either end of my street, but just wanted to get a rough idea from all you BCF'ers. What's an average price for a set of standard-ish 2-piece leathers?

Cheers

depends on what you want, if you want cheap and quality Hein Gericke make good sets, could probably get a set for couple hundred quid, maybe £300

the bigger names demand more money, like alpinestars etc, but they generally have more supple leather etc.
Only reason i chose an arlen ness 2 piece was because on the sets i tried from Weise, HG etc arms were slightly too long and dug into my wrists. The arlen ness set didnt have that problem, must be because italians are generally smaller? (heres to assuming arlen ness is italian Very Happy )

my arlen ness 2 piece set was £300 jacket £270 pants,

My Frank Thomas two piece set cost about £350 I think and bar the plastic belt loop snapping (and now replaced with a few heavy duty paperclips) they've lasted a good few years so far.

You can get el cheapo stuff on ebay for as little as £150, and you can spend up to 2k or so, it's depends entirely on the depth of your pockets and how much protection you think it will give.

Remember there are no legal minimum standards for leather so buy wisely. Get CE approved leathers if you can, not leathers with just CE approved armour(Although lots of that stuff is ok too).

This is relevant to my interests. I'm looking to do a track day on the z at some point! But I'm also a dirty, poor student.

Stuff like RST etc, any good?

I've got an arlen ness jacket, may look out for some good fitting trousers and get them made up to zip in, hg do this for super cheaps.

I'd say £200 - £300 upwards, although JTS have some suits for £150 about halfway down the page.

haha fair enough, well whatever the reason im a short ass and they fit bloody good! haha

Heard RST are good, some of their 1 piece suits and 2 piece look really good as well man.

I reccomend arlen ness pants man if you want an easy life for the zippage, they are lot slimmer fit than the likes of HG if your a slim chap like mself

I bought all my stuff from eBay - BNWT HG stuff which i purchased for a massive discount. Bit cheeky I know, but you should get yourself to an HG shop, try on some stuff to check your size (staff are v. helpful I found) then go home and trawl eBay. Think the leather trousers were tagged at £150, but I paid £60 and the jacket was tagged at £200 and I paid £55. Both did not have any flaws or anything, just some good deals (for me anyway). Also worth noting that some people mis-spell HG in listings and you can get stuff for even less this way!

Stu (not a pikey - honestly!)

Ironically I'm a lardy bugger. Not tried on any trousers, will pop into my local hg and have a gander though. The quality of my jacket is superb, couldn't be happier with it so aye

Would be interested in hearing from people who have crashed in leathers more than anything! And owned them a while with regular use etc

HG stuff is good, but zips break way too easily on them. I particularly love on the Arlen Ness jacket the way the zip is dead heavy duty!

£130 for a Dianese one-piece is the most I've paid in a long time.
Ok, it was second hand, but never 'tested' and fresh sliders.
Wouldn't have paid that much, especially for a Dianese, but it was an excellent fit.

Just out of interest, you don't seem to like Dianese and/or don't think they are worth the money?

Why's that?

I know for the same price as a lot of Dianese stuff you can get made to measure leathers elsewhere which is a much more sensible purchase - most people seem to buy leathers that are too big for them!!

First set I bought was a pretty decent Dianese 2-piece. First crash I had in them, they needed a hell of a lot of repair work after.
The leather-repairs person I took them to noted that the poncier 'fashionable' brands are often the worst for being 'single use'.

Crashed in various other cheaper leathers, many, I'm sure, 'as bad' as that crash and they've come out much better (the wheelie one, don't think you were there that day, though I did have a bit of amnesia, so may have forgotten Smile.) Current Dianese one-piece I've got seems a bit thin, but haven't tested it properly yet.

OK, Interesting as Dianese 'appears' to be sold as the 'premium' off the peg brand! Interesting to hear you think it's not as robust as the cheaper brands!

Word of mouth is the best way to find out what products are really like!! Wink

Wait 2 weeks and go to the BMF at Peterborough. I've been last 2yrs and got some Teknic 1 piece leathers for £50! all other stuff too and plenty of 2 pieces at bargain prices like you say you're after.

Very Happy

I paid £300 for an Arlen Ness jacket, and £250 for my alpine stars pants. Should be able to get a decent 2-peice set of leathers for about £400. As already said, the sky is the limit, and prices just keep going up and up.

i was in a similar position so went into my local hein gericke to get an idea of prices, they were offereing a deal where you buy the jacket and get the trousers free, so is got my set for £170,

https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/product_info.php/cPath/1_15_19/products_id/5099

jackets even cheaper now, but even for that price i can vouch for the hein gericke quality, came of a couple of weeks ago breaking most ribs and my pelvis without the slighest scratch on my skin Thumbs Up

Cheers for all the replies folks, some very useful info there. I finally decided to get off my arse and go for a look in the local shops and saw some decent stuff at not bad prices. Might check out Hein Gericke in Glasgow as well.
