Basically I see lots of Prima Donna's on here, but not really anyone that is truly 'popular' ... so what's the secret? Thinking

I've noticed that posting lots and lots of inane wiffle and starting meaningless polls seems to go down well.

I don't get it, blue_sv650s joined in November 08 and has 2 1/2 gold blobs and all he has done is make polls and make pointless threads.

I suppose I do to but how come he has so much karma for so little time.

Keith is indeed a top chap from what I can make out ... but is he really 'popular'???

Yes he has more gold than a gangster rapper, but that only means he's helpful/nice ... that doesn't necessarily equate to being 'popular' ...

How can one define popularity in the confines of an internet forum?

I think it's safe to say that people like Keith, hence the fact that his opinion is pretty highly respected. Knowledge is power, as far as the internet's concerned. He's got oodles of knowledge, and enough humility to share it with the rest of us. Add to that the fact that he's genuinely civil, and doesn't invest much/any energy in telling people to cock off, and he's very much on to a winner.
Ergo, he's popular.

Now, where's my kickback, Oracle? Wink

Same as it is done in a social context I guess Thinking

- Who do people want to hang around/be seen with?
- Who do people want to be seen to be like?
- Whom do people seek recognition from?

I suppose in e-form that can equate to the following ...

- Having lots of groupies that follow someone every post/thread?
- Is there a trend setter ... i.e. they say summin is cool and others suddenly think its cool too ... or perhaps has people replicating mode of speech/prose?
- This kinda goes alongside point one, but rather than just following threads/posts, actually has people trying to win favour in them, or at least get noticed in some way??

I am sire there are other indicators, but they are the ones that come to mind ....

But at the end of the day, you don't have to quantify 'popularity' mathematically/tangibly ... you just know it ... Wink

Anyhoo, we aren't really getting any further ... now we all like Kickstart, but I am not sure he is 'popular' in the highschool sense ...

Last I checked, 'high school' popularity isn't worth a damn in the real world, though.

Laughing Are you sure you're not reading more into this than there actually is? Laughing

I think that basically there are 5 types of people in terms of forum interaction:
* those that one clicks* with instantly (same mentality/interests/sense of humour);
* those that one doesn't click with so quickly, but you recognise after a while that you appreciate where they are coming from;
* people that just really irritate one personally;
* those one thinks are complete tossers and just don't bother taking seriously; and
* those one hasn't noticed (yet).

I don't think its a popularity contest, per se; anybody who thinks that it is, well ... I expect they have peculiar issues about themselves, or perhaps take things way more personally than they should. It is, after all, only an internet forum.

Most of us who have lived within the internet age for a reasonable period of time, by now recognise that the internet is not ENTIRELY exactly like real life.

Those who think it is, should step away from the computer.

*as opposed to "clique"

Nor is BCF/Internet popularity ... but that doesn't mean neither exist!! Wink

Now there is someone who gave it some thought!! Thumbs Up

I'm not sure I have isolated the prom king/queen of the forum, but I have detected a trend in peoples responses ... it seems anger, rudeness and aggression are all well applauded/supported traits.

You only need to have a look at all the +karma someone gets when they go off at someone (normally needlessly).

I just find some of the stuff that goes on a total curiosity ... Thinking

There does seem to be an inordinate amount of lezzers on here, I guess for a girl to be proper into bikes, she needs to be a lezzer as it is a very 'butch' hobby/sport?!!? .... ....

The internet's like a big library, only you can talk ("talk") to people ... without getting frowned at by the librarian.

And blokes who like bikes are not all that different than blokes who like cars. They're all a form of petrolhead.

And I like petrolhead blokes.
Very much.

So ... no, luv.
No dungarees here Wink Thumbs Up

Given that it's an internet meeting place rather than a physical meeting place, popularity would be defined differently to the everyday 'wanna hang out with' mates style popularity. On the Internet it's more of a respect for their post content and manner.

Everyone has their own area of expertise and I think that if you want someone who is an overall good all round sort of person, Kickstart is your man. You get great advice from Stinkwheel on all types of stuff too, including his day job which makes his posts over and above the call of duty, G always gives great advice, Itchy's an intrepid adventurer.....there are loads of quality posters, which is what makes it such a good site. Singling out one individual would be naive and pointless.

In my opinion 'BCF Popularity' can only be judged by giving advice that is well thought out and delivered impeccably - what could be better in a Bike Forum?
