Tonight I was riding home from work about 22:30, its still spitting and the ground is soaked, and some fucking tosser in a silver people carrier thing decides to sit within 10 feet of my back wheel!

Normaly in the dry i would swerve about my lane a bit, tends to make them think WTF and back off, but my tyres arn't in great condition, and the ground was soaked, so I didnt want to try any funny business.

What would you do in this situation? I was considering just pulling over and letting it past, but I'm too stubborn for that Laughing

Giving a lot more space than a lot of bikes I see!
How about pulling over and let them past at a place safe to do so?

I pulled over to let a slower vehicle being used faster today, as it annoys me when I'm the one trying to go faster on the slower vehicle*.

* Story isn't really relevant.

I do get a bit annoyed when cars sit close when I'm in a car, especially when there's something in front of me. Don't really have the problem on the bike and don't care in the van.

I wouldnt really say i was worried, the roads were quiet enough for me not to be worried about having to slow down sharply.

My main gripe was that although it was in a 30 zone, he could have overtaken easily on a bit of the road, yet he choose not to, then proceeded to sit so close to me, im guestimating 10 feet, all i could see was a headlight in each mirror.

I think a google/paint map will help, give me 5 mins and ill pop one up Thumbs Up

Remove yourself from the situation, pull over and live to ride another day.

I generally find headlights etc more 'intimidating' at night. Especially modern cars with silly-bright ones.

I always slow down slowly, then take off again. If they still stick to my rear wheel I do it more violently to an even slower speed but then take off whilst holding the rear brake on ever so slightly, that way they see my brake light and me disappearing at the same time and get left behind! Laughing

Slow down or move out of the way.

I find that bikers (usually on sunny weekends) often tail-gate when I'm driving in 30/40 zones. Why do it? If I had to slam on the brakes or have a mechanical fault with the car the car will slow suddenly and the rider will shoot over the top of the car.

If you're not going to pass, hang back. If you want to pass, overtake when safe to do so....

+1 for pulling over.

Indicate nice and long and brake progressively, just in case the twat up your arse has the reflexes of a stoned turtle.

Ride in as dominant a postion on your bit of road as possible, that deters most people from getting too close. Then any that do get close remember you have one weapon in your armoury that they don't.

On a bike you can put the brakelight on without actually braking. Just touch the front brake enough to activate the microswitch but not enough to actually slow you down.

Wait till he's really close then put the brake light on for a few seconds. Unless you've got a total nutter behind you he will brake and drop back a little. You may have to repeat a few times till he gets the message.

In the car when I get a tailgater I tend to hug the kurb and throw loads of crap up at them, they soon back off then, this work especially well on back roads.

On the bike I would just roll off and let the bike slow down to 20ish (in a 30 limit) then roll on again slowly, they will either pass or back off.

I find this trick works a treat on the M25 when lorries cut you up or pull out on you, when your either in the car or on the bike. I tend to get in front and just back off enough to make them have to slow down, usually its so busy they cant pass again and have to wait for you then. This save alot of road rage and I feel alot calmer in doing this. They arent too happy about it but then I can just wind up to speed again and all is well in the world.

I found that if I just touch my back brake pedal ( not to apply brake ) just touch it with your foot then your brake light should come on, once there is any tension/pressure on brake system the light should light, that or just keep getting gradualy slower.

Would this sort of window sticker make people think without being too inflammatory?

I'd notice the 'kitten' that had strayed into my path and perform an emergency stop, officer. Mr. Green

Not really, I'd just make sure I had enough gap between myself and whatever else is in front of me and pull over when safe to let them continue with their idiocy out of my way. Thumbs Up

Accelerate just a little, when you're sure he's accelerated too, full on with both brakes, and then start furiously paddling backwards towards him, cutting down his stopping distance even further.

Don't let the sound of screeching tyres unsettle you..hold your nerve and wait for the bang.

That'll learn 'em. Thumbs Up

Lol crazy fool.

Pull over and let the monkey pass everytime, as mentioned above give plenty of notice to let them know your pulling over, the chances are if someones retarded enough to tailgate a bike then they'll be retarded enough to not notice your pulling over. Annoys the hell out of me when people get that close, especially in poor conditions, plus it can effect your concerntration due to looking in the mirrors to see where the goon is rather than in front of you.

Tail-gaters fall into two major categories:

Pushy idiots who are probably like that in normal life too.

Nervous drivers who don't really know what's going on and are probably like that in the rest of their life, but not endangering anybody when not driving.

Or 3 types:

Idiots - On a mission and think the fastest way round you is to sit on your bumper waiting for a passing point (these fools are fun to watch behind a lorry as they can't see smeg and will "have a look" just when on-coming traffic arrives) Will often overtake not caring if there is no room to pull in as they only want to get past the car in front.

Pushers - Try and push you along and make you go faster (I think you met this one). Lack the skill to overtake and think you will go faster if they are 10" from your wheels and give you a push.

Habit Tailgaiters - Have just got used to driving close to the car in front. Maintain the same distance if they are doing 30 or 80. Often asleep at the wheel after being hipnotised by your rear lights.

I also find that peoples personality's are not reflected in there driving. Otherwise supermarkets would be a mass of tangled trollys!!

I believe that being in a car or on a bike de-humanises people enough in our perception to excuse our (collective) bad behaviour (its not Joe from accounts is some idiot in a Volvo).

I think they are reflected, but driving is a situation in which people insulated and don't feel threatened.

-Forcing your way around a supermarket in close proximity to others could result in recriminations. A small woman in a car driving aggressively would be unlikely to behave in the same way to a bunch of labourers in a shop.

Really sensible idea, making the tailgater stare at the rear of your car reading a sign.

It's hardly a lengthy novel.
-If we were to use that argument, we should remove all text on vehicles and road signs too.

I think that it could make people think, which is the root of the problem.

Obviously, it would need to be big enough to be read easily without having to get even closer...
