I need to copy 70gb of stuff from my pc to mates laptop.

Both have wireless. Both got usb.

Is this possible?

Do I create a new network and add him to it kind of thing?

you be better off geting a cross over network cable and copying the data that way

but yeh. cross over cable would be best. direct connection ad-hoc network between the 2 pcs.

that said, if they've both got wireless im guessing at least one of you has a router. if so just join the network and copy. ok it'll take a while over wireless (wired is a lot quicker) but it'll work.

failing that you can get ide/sata to usb hot swap adapters. so you could remove your harddrive connect the adapter and plug it into the usb slot of the laptop.

personally id just copy everything onto my 250gb portable hdd Wink (got it for this very purpose)

Done it using a standard ethernet cable. Both computers are gigabit so it worked fine.

Connect both to the same router,and share the folders that you want to transfer.And go on network and copy the files,is like copying from a CD or DVD.and the speed is very good

Agreed. Macs now do not need a cross over to network with each other without a switch etc... Plain strait thu cable works well...

I dare say that most modern PCs will detect the type of cable being plugged in and switch mode accordingly. I've not had an issue using one cable for a 100Mb router and then using it to directly connect for gigabit ethernet.

Fact.. Most PC LAN cards dont switch to tx.rx (cross over)...

If your both connected to the same wireless network (So your only going over a LAN not WAN).

Then just right click and share the c:\ drive of the machine you want to get the files (porn) from. Click sharing and security and set it up as a shared folder.

Get the IP of that machine by opening command propmt.

Start --> run --> cmd

Type "ipconfig" into the command window. This will show the the computers IP address.

Now go to the other computer, open up 'My computer' and in the address bar type:

\\ipAddressOfSharedComputer\c$

i.e \\192.168.0.10\c$

This should get you to the C:\ drive of the other computer.

This only works if your both on the same LAN.

Who uses PC LAN cards? Almost all PC's have onboard gigabit ethernet which auto switches. My motherboard will actually show how long the cable is that's plugged in and what type it is.

Ehhh .. That is a LAN card.. Local Area Network card (built in device normally these days)...

no one said an additional network device..

Please tell me our joking and your posts are for fun?

When you said LAN card I assumed you meant a PCI adapter card. I could imagine those not having an auto switching function which is why I said that most motherboards have gigabit ethernet etc.

I agree that most if not all PCI Ethernet adapters dont have the capability to detect the type of cable but my point was that not many people will actually have that type of ethernet but will instead have a modern 'onboard' device.
