PostPosted: 19:30 - 11 May 2009    Post subject: Urgent Vista Help - Graphics Card Reply with quote

Evening folks, I was goofing on my PC and set the resolution to one that was too high for my monitor. Normally not a problem because it resets after so many seconds, but this time I was bouncing a ball against the wall and it hit the keyboard and accepted the settings and I'll be buggered if I can Vista to work in normal mode any more - it does the Vista splash screen then the monitor just goes into safe mode because it can't display that resolution.

Things I have tried:

Safe mode - uninstalling graphics card drivers then rebooting. It downloaded new drivers then decided to change into the resolution that monitor can't show again before I had a chance to change it.

Vista last good config - just puts the monitor into standby straight away when it loads Vista

Vista boot in 640 mode - Goes into Vista, but a second later changes res to one that can't be displayed and puts monitor to sleep.

This is driving me mental, any idea how to change this. Really what I want to do is set the display settings for the graphics card whilst I'm in safe mode, but it doesn't let you do that as it just default to the "proper" Vista ones as soon as you reboot.

Any ideas? Sad

Usually going into Window's safe mode and choosing windows own default VGA driver, save it then reboot helps before having to choose appropriate driver.

On the other hand you could remove graphics card, boot up, switch off, re-install card as that may help put it back to initially the way it was installed in the first place as the settings have now changed before it was customised by thinking it's a new graphics card!

Try this. (assuming you can login):
1. Hold Start and press R
2. Type 'desk.cpl' and press enter
3. Press Tab twice. You are now in control of the resolution slider
4. Press Left a bunch of times.
5. Press Enter

It should flash up to your chosen resolution for 15 seconds.

Hi, yeah unfortunately I tried setting it to use a VGA driver, but as soon as it re-downloads and install the proper driver it reverts back to this stupid hi resolution for some reason.

Can't remove the card because it's on board, but I did disable it and remove all trace of the drivers (which still didn't work)

It's absolutely mental this!

That would be ideal, but unfortunately, unless I'm in safe mode I can't see the screen (I've already tried to change resolution without seeing the screen and it's bloomin' impossible!)

Sorry, I hadn't noticed that they were instructions for doing it in the dark.

Just tried that and I'm still seeing nothing. Is that definitley the key presses?
