I assumed it was just one of those things that it clonks all the time from 1st to 2nd, until my friend showed me that he can change every single gear without making a single clonk, clink anything!
Do others find it hard to change from 1st to 2nd without the clonk noise or is it just me?

Different bikes clunk differently.

Most I have had between 1st and 2nd have a larger clunk than other gears but on my current bike I can if I am careful make a 1st-2nd change without noise. Some bikes just do it because you have to go past neutral.

Not suprised to see you've got a Honda - been told they clunk there the most (certainly both mine do!)

However, i did find with me good old CG125 that it doesn't always clunk, and it happened less when it had warmed up.

Neutral into 1st is best described as dropping a brick into a bucket Thumbs Up Laughing

Never noticed 1st into 2nd being clunk. Whats your chain tension like? It can have an effect on gear shifts.

Neutral into first sounds like you just dropped the bike, first into second makes a clunk/clonk/dink on my nsr aswell mate i just assumed it was ordinary.

i find it depends on the gear change befor hand, if i lightly flicked it up a gear, when i go back down, it will make abit of a clunk noice

Nope none of my bikes do, or have done. It's technique, you don't just stamp the bugger in, you've got to feel it. Thumbs Up

My nsr was fine with it, i didnt use to have clunks. Now i have a Hornet 600 it clonks loads from 1st to 2nd and always from neutral to first but i figure the downchange cant be helped when it clonks but going from 1st to 2nd can be helped and its bugging me that i dont have the 'technique' to do it without making such a noise.

My Nsr 125 never really clunked but my cbr 600 is insanely clunkey! You can hear the gear change over the sound of the engine even at high revs. I've noticed that it only really does it if you don't properly release the throttle before changing or if your hard/fast with the clutch. I can drive it without making it clunk but i quite enjoy fast gear changes so the gear clunk can't really be avoided.

Mine has moods. For most of my commuting, its sweet as a nut. If the suns shining and I'm going for a bimble, it has a definite 'pulling' clunk from neutral to first, like it wants to get going. When its pissing down, it has an entirely different clunk which can best be described as the same tone a woman uses when you ask her whats wrong and she replies "Nothing!"

My Honda CG likewise has an almighty clunk going from neutral -> 1st, other than that I've not noticed anything significant in gearbox 'clunk' noises.
