I usually get my tax disk online (if I can) because it's no big deal, easy to do etc. Well I have just logged on to do my car tax, and I got the paying bit...and found out if I pay online it will cost me an extra £5!!!!!

Clearly, I will gather my documents and walk down to the Post Office in my lunch break...

Cheeky gits. So much for service! Mad

Yep! That sounds about right! They've been trying to take as much business as possible away from the little Post Offices over the past few years and now they think they've succeeded they put the price up! I always use the little PO near me as I figure if I don't use it we'll all lose it, which around here would mean a good hike to find an alternative.

Having said that I try as much as possible to apply that principle to the food shopping/petrol too, else the world will become one big Tesco with carte blanche to set the prices. Little bit more pricey locally, but I have to drive 8 miles to the nearest 'superstore' so marginal over all. Choice is where it's at!

Are you sure the price hasn't just gone up? I'm 99% sure that it's the same price online or at the post office. It's the same for my bikes/car anyway.

You pay a surcharge online if you use a credit card. No extra for debit cards.

I've got the paperwork in front of me....and I learnt to read many years ago (thus being able to see the difference between what's written on the paper and the screen price), the DVLA are trying to pull a swift one on me.

Well they can get stuffed. Cool

Are you really sure?!

I suspect finger trouble, over it costing £5 more online. Razz

Bear in mind the price online is different from the paperwork if the price has changed in the meantime. Does it explicitly say it's an online fee, or is the price just £5 more?

I concur. When you buy something with a credit card the seller gets charged by the credit card company. So the shops/restaurants you use it at soak up the extra charge for you.

However the Government/DVLA isn't willing to do this so they add the charge.

Using your debit card means no card companies involved so it's free.

Try reading the screen bit again. Wink

They wont let us do the on line payment in NI. I tried. wont even recognise my plate. They dont even except my debit card. Confused And I wasnt on their system as being insured had to run around in circles for a tax disc.

They advertise loads of ways to pay to make it easier for people but wouldnt except a visa electron card or an on line payment from me.

In fairness they had the disc out really quick.

It's only a £2.50 charge for credit card instead of debit cards.

I'll be interested to know what type of vehicle, and the tax bracket it comes under that you're getting charged £5 extra by the DVLA.

I hadn't even got to the payment stage...just ticked all the boxes and then entered the reference number. Then it popped up saying the sum for both 6/12mths stating £5 more than the paperwork.

Only got the paperwork three days ago. So how it can be deemed higher online is crazy.

Anyway, the reason I published this online was to warn you others to watch out for it. Whether you believe me or not, I don't give a fig, I know what I saw and that's all that matters.

If my warning saves someone else from paying more than they should, then good! The DVLA shouldn't be able to get away with such scams. Thumbs Up

I'm trying to remember, but (credit card surcharge aside) I think the paper form has a note stating that the figure online may not match, and could be higher.

So they will be using up old forms, the amount stated will be wrong will be wrong....
Quote:
Note: an additional charge of £2.50 will be added to the amount payable if you use a credit card

One point ot note as well. While you can pay via credit card online and pay the surcharge. You cannot pay via credit card at the post office Thumbs Up

Not a scam though, is it!

If you go down the post office you'll have to pay the higher price too. The price has just increased since they wrote your renewal. It changed on the 1st of May. It's not rocket science to work out what has happened. Your renewal letter was written before the 1st May.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

These are the prices, whether you tax online, at the post office, by post or whatever. It does not cost more to tax online and there is no scam.

Okay okay, don't get your knickers in a twist...not everyone spends all their spare time on the internet looking at such 'interesting' things.

No, but it does pay to check before you post Embarassed

I guess you must be young, as April is always the month when RFT rises....
You will soon learn, that its better to stump up a month early one year, and then think you are saving on the other 11 Wink Laughing
