If you take out insurance but don't tick the 'add pillion cover' option.... Then carry a pillion can the police etc tell? what's the consequence?

BTW, I have not done this and do not want to do this, it's pure curiousty as to why the one little box ticked put's the whole premium up a load. Crying or Very sad

They can't tell but if dor some reason they supected you didnt have the cover (not sure how or why they would) then they could ring the insurance company and check and then you'd be in bother.

The big trouble would be in the event of an accident and the pillion was injured your likely to get an IN10 conviction for not having the proper insurance and the insurance company would void your policy leaving you unable to claim for any damages. AND if the insurance company was really nasty they could try and claim back any of the pillions injury payments from you via the courts although this is pretty unlikely.

Yes you do, its called Fully Comprehensive. There is some argument about whether or not passengers are covered by third party fire and theft cover. I personally think they are, others I've spoken to think they technically aren't.

Still, its not a scam because the highest payouts for bike crashes are always to the pillion passenger because more often than not they are injured worse than the rider. All the insurance company are doing is allowing you to say you won't take pillions. I never take pillions for example, and so it benefits me. The default level of cover used to include pillions, so actually they are just offering you an option to lower your premium.

Its not a scam, far from it.

When I took out my insurance I was told that there was no need for this so called pillion cover and that the third party cover covers the pillion in event of an accident. But then again I guess it depends who you go with....

Technically yes the pillion is covered regardless however if you carry pillions and knowingly tick the box on your insurance that says you don't then that's fraud.

They probably know you can't carry one legally on your current licence, so there's no extra risk to them but "we'll have a 5er off you anyway". Laughing

Passengers are third parties and so must be covered by the insurance company.

All the best

Well then, I'll have to not take pillions or shell out for it.

I know il crash in the future, I know il carry pillions just can't guarantee I won't combine the two although I hope not.

Nope, they are covered - motor insurance provides unlimited liability for third party injury.

Absolutely. The reason they DON'T offer a DISCOUNT for not taking passengers in cars as it's highly unlikely that anyone is going to have a 5 seater car and not take passengers.

Actually it's limited to about £20M on average now.

I got a quote for straight after I pass my test for the D600, £1.1k, with Pillion Cover it was almost no different.

How so, where's that come from? If it is, good - it'll save me negotiating £66million quid's worth of treaty in a couple of months time....

Another thing, if you buy a bike, get insured and pick it up, ride it home and get stopped it's all well and good explaining you just bought it from the guy down the road but in most cases you'd get a producer, no?

What if your licence doesn't show bike entitlement?

I lost my new one when it came though but kept my car licence photocard for I.D so I still have it here. I know that won't do for the situation and the turnaround of the DVLA is appauling so I couldn't get one sent within 7 days. what's the fine/points etc for not producing? I have the counterpart which shows full car and (2 year 33bhp restricted)bike entitlement so could I blag it with that?

I was told that I didn't need t apply for a new license once the restriction was up. It just became an A license.

I don't actually remember seeing that option on any insurance form, but then I do usually do it online, and my bike has been modded to single seater anyway!!!

On my insurance i have excluded pillions but if i crash while carrying one their liability is the minimum required by law and my excess jumps £200

That would be TPPD (third party property damage).

+1

I was told I didn't need to send it off. Mine still has the <25kw on it.
