I've got a trojan!

Not quite sure how it happened but all of a sudden I started to get huge amounts of banner ads and pop ups. Checked the firewall and it was off? I wouldn't mind but I havent been looking at porn or weird sites anyways?
I suspect, through googling that one of the antivrus checkers suggested may have actually made things a little worse and I continuely get told that I have a trojan of some description or another.
I then got AVG to run a diagnostic and it detected 17 threats and deleted them but I'm still having problems and the laptop crashes due to a fates error at random times.
Can these ever be truly deleted and be safe again or start from scratch with a new laptop.
Its a little old and a cheap one anyways.
So its using the old phone for now, please help.

If you can remember the name of the trojan then it would be worthwhile searching for information about it in Google.

There is usually some guide about removing it as these things have a habit of not being completely removed.

try superantispyware and malwarebytes both are free to download and small programs. I had one last year that got the better of my AVG and wouldn't let me click on links without being redirected. those progs were recommended as the little sod had also knobbled all my system restore points to before the infection!!

AVG should have kept a log of all your previous scans.

Open user interface

Computer scanner - Scan history - View details - Infections

Check the result , get the names and put them into google. There may be removal tools available for some.

Did you scan in safe mode?
