Hi Guys,

I now have my Beta Techno 250cc running, i replaced the inner clutch gasket to stop a leak and its holding up ok.

now i have the bike running it seems a bit.. strange.

i have had 2 stroke bikes before but only 125's

The bike seems to have a bit of a rough idle - could this just be the carb? just needs to strip and clean?

The Chap who sold me the bike said he was using about a 50:1 Oil petrol ratio - i have downloaded the user manual and it says i should use 70:1, so do i just start using 70:1 or keep using 50:1?

The bike takes a while to warm up then when its ready to run it gets too hot - any reason why its getting really hot or is this normal for a 250?

Since changing the Gasket the kick start wont come back up on its own - i dont mind pulling it back up once the engine has started but could this cause any damage?

The bike scares the crap out of me and would be alot happier riding it if i knew it was in tip top condition - any recommendations of things to check/do to get it running perfect?

Cheers .

Well you say its getting to hot.
If you use 70:1 ratio it will only get hotter as there will even less oil and more petrol.

Is there a return spring or some sort off mechanism that allows the kickstart to come back up ?Maybe worth having a look, take it apart and have a nosey.

The rough ideling could be wrong mixture. Thats the only thing making me think that maybe it could be 70:1.
Have a good clean of carb. Make sure the idel jet is clean.
Like you say it is 250 and it could just be a hot running bike.
70:1 would get it warmed up a bit quicker to.

Yeah, thinking about it now. 70:1 may solve your problems.

If it runs on premix putting less oil in will make it run richer and therefore cooler.

Can i just start putting 70:1 in now or will i need to drain the tank first? i think i will take the case off and take a look inside, i did take some pics with the cover off and can see a spring so its prob just not in the correct position,

My only concern is that it will run too hot if i put 70:1 in,

it has a fan on the rad but i have never seen it spin, should it just spin when it gets hot or should it always be on?

Thanks

Connect the fan up to the battery directly to check if the actual fan works, other than that you're relying on the thermostat thingy working. Either way it wont come on untill the bike is overheating, normaly for me its just in im sitting in traffic for a while.

Also with regards to it running hot, This:

Sounds right to me, you should just be able to start running it at 50:1 without issues, it will dialute whats in the tank so to start with it wont quite be 50:1 but it will be after a few tanks.

Hi

The fan will probably only run when the radiator temperature is high enough (not the engine temperature). If the thermostat stuck closed then the engine would overheat while the radiator would stay closed and the fan would not come on.

Less oil will make it run richer and should lower the temp. However going from 50:1 to 70:1 is probably not really a massive difference.

As to the kick start, suspect that there is a return spring that became dislodged when you had the clutch cover off.

All the best

Keith

if you leave if down when the engine is started, it will wear out the cogs, you might hear a funny noise coming from it if you leave it down and the engines running.

they usualy work on a spring back system, so i asume when you have put the cases back on, you havnt put the spring back right, i did the same thing.

see if you can get a manual for the engine and see how the kick start works, and if you put it back the same way.

hope this helps.

I can see the spring but didnt touch it, i guess i knocked it when i put the case back on, it does make a noise when the kick start is down but i put it back up as soon as its started -

I have looked ALL over the place for a workshop manual and can only find part number lists and diagrams and user manual - here is a pic of the case off, you can see the spring - this was taken as soon as i took the cover off.

ok, heres what i would do.

take the spark plug out (so it doesnt start and there is no compression)

keep the cover off and attach the kickstart.

go to start it as you would with your foot but do it with your hand and see whats going wrong?

also, the spring usualy hooks onto the case somewhere, check what the inside of the cover looks like, might be overlookign somthing.
