Hi folks,

A quick question for you all! I'm writing a novel and one of my main characters is a biker. He's been riding pretty much daily for about eight years or so. I've got a scene coming up where he needs to give a girl a ride on the back of his bike in an emergency. It's night-time and late at night. I need to know what advice he'll give to the girl (who's never ridden on a bike before). He's given plenty of people lifts in the past, so he's not a stranger to having passengers.

I've had two lots of conflicting advice regarding this (one from a long term biker, and one from a friend who was given advice as a newbie riding pillion), so I thought I'd ask the pro's Smile

Does he:

a) keep hold of his helmet as, being the rider, he'll be more obvious with not wearing it, and tell her to lean with him into the corners with her arms around him,

b) give her the helmet to wear, even though it'll be too big for her, tell her to lean with him...

c) Keep hold of his helmet and tell her not to lean at all...

d) give her the helmet and tell her not to lean at all...

e) something else entirely?

Hopefully this isn't too off-topic for here, and I apologise - I just want to get this right! Smile

Thanks in advance for your help!

He'll wear his helmet, tell her to lean into him and with him in the corners with her arms around his waist touching his helmet.

I always tell them, 'just sit behind me like a parcel, if you're in line with my back you're in the right place.'

I'd wear the helmet to keep the shit out of my eyes as it's quite important that the rider can see where he's going.

The fine for not wearing one is peanuts and non endorsable.

Oh yeah, always mention that they don't have to put their feet down when you stop at traffic lights etc.....

I tend to use the phrase 'like a sack of potatoes'. Not as flattering but gets the message across Very Happy

Well I'd give the helmet to my passenger. They are more likely to fall off than I am.

I usually tell them to keep their body in line with mine, take some weight on the footpegs when the bike accelerates and to grip my hips with their knees when I brake

I think it is most likely he will punch her in the tits. Throw the helmet in the air as a distraction and slip it in her gary, whisper in her ear to lean into him.

Sitting on the tank, legs wrapped around his waist. Preferably asian and wriggling, too.

Always lean with the rider/bike... as above, basically staying in line shouldn't require you to 'do' anything as you just move with the bike and rider.

If I was in a proper-hurry, I'd want some kind of wind protection for my eyes if I was riding fast. Otherwise I'd be tempted to give the helmet to the pillion.

Helmet sizes are weird things - don't expect that just because he's a man he's going to have a bigger helmet size (maybe just said because I'm a bloke that generally takes a medium Embarassed ).

Remember that a lot of bikes will have 'grab handles', to the rear of the bike which a pillion can hold on to.

I find the best method for being a pillion (not counting cruisers as I've never taken pillion or been taken pillion on one and if it was an emergency, I'd probably dump it and go for a gentle jog instead Razz) is to sit a bit further back in the seat and place my hand on the tank. This way I'm more inline with the acceleration forces and braced for the braking forces.
With the pillion's arms around the rider they get the full weight of the pillion pressed against them - which may be nice in some cases, but kinda wasted when you've got a heavy leather jacket with a back protector in!

Thumbs Up for doing the research, have read some books with really terrible descriptions... if you need any other advice about models etc, please do ask Smile.

"Hold your arms around my middle and make like a rucksack. And I'm wearing the helmet, so keep your eyes closed. And don't freak or anything, we'll be going no faster than thirty."

If she's pretty I would wear the helmet, tell her to lean further than me into corners, when she bangs her head on the roundabout chevron sign and is semi-concious on the floor I would play with her tits and take the obligatory photo on my phone to prove I had pulled, then scarper, after saying thank you of course, manners cost nothing after-all.

If she's ugly, I'd tell her its illegal to ride on a motorcycle without a lid, so get a bus.

Sometimes I think I'm the only honest bloke on this planet!

I bet my book gets more readers, male readers maybe, but it will have glossy photo's as well for those speed readers out there.
