GPZ500 sump plate replacement and gasket bodgery

Not sure this shouldnt be in the workshop.

I had a bit of an oil change from hell yesterday, partialy my fault.

I decided to skimp out on a 30p crush washer, to cut a long story short i over tightened the bolt to compensate and cracked the sump plate I have repaired that with chemical metal and it seems to have done the job alright

Unfortunatly it seems to be leaking from the gasket at the front aswell, so ill need to take the sump plate off and change the gasket, i figure that while its off i may aswell change the sump plate to avoid any future mis-haps.

I understand that my engine, or at least a variant of my engine went in to several bikes, will the sump plate from older GPZ's and things like the old and new ER-5 sump plate fit, or would it have been changed between bikes for some reason?

Also since i cant afford to have the bike off the road im going to temporarily cover the leak in the gasket with duct tape, any reason why this is a bad idea?

How big a leak?

Those EX500 motors are all pretty much identical. Electrics and valve differ but the engine itself is pretty universal.

The oil isn't under pressure at that point so anything that would physically block the oil leak ought to be good enough for a temporary repair. Your chemical metal might be a better bet than duck tape.

I can't see how overtightning the sump plug would cause the gasket to leak though.

Sure the oil isn't coming from elsewhere? (like dripping down from the filter).

Nope, its 100% leaking from the gasket, i cant work it out either although it definetly wasnt happening before and it is now

Was a bit dubious about using chemical metel incase i end up siticking the sump to the engine, it may seem unlikely but it would happen to me i pretty much guarentee it.

Just seen a gasket kit is going to cost me £68!

Since its not under pressure would normal gasket paper do, or even the old cornflakes box trick?

Hi

Word of warning. On the GPZ some of the pressurised oil ways do go through the sump. For this there are some O ring seals between the sump and the engine internals. Do not lose one as you will trash your engine.

Also means I would be very careful with a home made gasket. Make it too thich and the O rings will not manage to seal the joins in the oil ways.

Any guestimate as to how thick is too thick?

Hi

I would make sure it is as close to standard thickness as possible.

I would also expect a replacement gasket to only be a couple of quid. US price seems to be $11.

Just a quicky on the home made gasket, is it advisable to use some sort of instant gasket with the carboard/paper? Or is it just a case of cut the paper to a template and then away it goes?
