That is one of the most confusing things i have ever seen! I would never have managed that coupled with test nerves...

Their layout diagram is more confusing IMHO, if you compare it to the manoeuvre diagram anyway.

You don't do it all in one go anyway. It runs something like this:

1. He'll tell you to treat the course like its a road, so do appropriate observations. You then get told to park in either of the green boxes to your left (2) or right (1). The green cones marking the parking space are 2.5m apart.

2. He'll tell you to take the bike off the stand in whatever box you parked it in and wheel it backwards into the other cones without hitting them, so the bike now faces forwards towards the slalom. I was told by an observing instructor that if you parked the bike originally in the leftmost of the parking spaces (2) you'll be wheeling the bike with it on your right, so if you find this odd park in the right hand space (1) to avoid this.

3 and 4. You'll get told to ride the slalom around the yellow cones (3) and do two figure 8 circuits of the blue cones (4). He'll signal when you've completed the two figure 8s.

The yellow slalom cones are 4.5m apart.

The blue figure 8 cones are 6.5m apart.

I did my shoulder checks before starting off.

5, 6 and 7. You'll get told to ride around the circuit (5) and head towards the speed trap where you'll do the avoidance manuoeuvre (6).

Your speed is checked as you pass through the red and yellow cones on each side. The minimum is 50 kph (31.1 mph). You swerve around between the two blue cones (6), the nearest which is offset from your path by 0.3m, and do a controlled stop with your front wheel inside the four blue cones (7). The four cones are spaced 1 x 1.5m apart and are 31m away from the swerve manouvre.

If you weren't fast enough you'll get a second attempt at the swerve.

Don't forget your checks before starting the 5, 6, 7 bit.

8. You'll next be asked to move to the yellow line marked by the three green cones. Here you'll do your checks and do a U turn (8), like you'd do on the road. The opposite kerb is 7.5m away, marked by another yellow line and three yellow cones.

9. You next get told to do the slow ride starting between two pairs of green cones (9), placed 17m apart. The examiner will walk in front of you with a clipboard. You stay behind him moving at walking pace, without putting a foot down. I was told by an instructor that the minimum time for the slow ride is 10 seconds, thats about 6.1 kph or 3.8 mph.

10 and 11. You get told to go round the circuit again (10) and come back through the speed trap at 50+kph as before, except this time the examiner will hold his hand up for you to do an 'emergency' controlled stop, after you've gone through the gates.

Remember its a controlled stop, breaking distance in the dry at 30 mph is 45 feet, Overall stopping distance 75 feet, so don't slam on the anchors and just cover the back brake.

Again if you weren't fast enough through the gate, you get a second attempt.

Don't forget your observations before starting 10 and 11.

It's not hard or confusing. It might first look like a sea of cones when you approach the course, but it's all separated out to make it easy enough.

I failed my first attempt on this last week, going again this week.

I think we should be allowed a practice session on the circuit before the test as its really easy to fail the speed restriction one.

i didnt get maximum speed and examiner would not let me do it again. have heard few others saying this as well

on the notes it does say that the examiner must give you two attempts but seems only a few are willing to.

is this another case that they have to fail a certain number of people a week? The rest of my test was perfect

just back from passing mine today at 12.48.

was much easier than i thought despite being watched by a few instructors with 5 students each...

went far to fast through the emerg stop speed gate and stopped just outside the box but the examiner took the excess speed into account and let it go.

found the swerve a piece of piss, was quite worried with all the crashes people have had but it was so easy, the 'swerve' is so slight you could probably virtually straight line it if you got your position right.

so onto module 2!

The DVLA have always denied that they have quotas.

What bike were you on, alot of people on 4stroke singles like cg's are having trouble making the speed, maybe training schools should start using 2smokes Twisted Evil

The mod1 marking sheet has a second attempt check box on it.

If you failed because you weren't fast enough, but the the swerve or stop were fine, then you should get a second attempt. If you cocked either up by hitting a cone etc, and you were still too slow I don't think you'd get a second try.

was on a Honda XR125, making the speed was no problem, think i probably carried a fair bit through the sweeping bend at the top, changed up to third for the swerve then stopped
