Following on from my previous post about me trying to get me cylinder head off to remove a broken spark plug.

I've tried coiling some rope into the cylinders and turning the engine over by hand and this did break the seal and I can now get the whole head to move but it still will not come off. It will lift maybe 3 - 4mm all the way round but will not go any higher than that no matter how hard I pull and wiggle the thing.

I'm guessing it's getting stuck on one of the dowels but other than put loads of penetrating oil down there and lots of wiggling i'm a bit short of ideas on where to go next.

Access is a bit of an issue so i'm now thinking I may take the whole engine out of the frame just so that I can get a better hold on the thing.

I'm also wondering if some ratchet straps may pull it off as screwfix sell a 0.4 tonne one for about £8. There are some passageways in the head to allow rainwater to run out from around the sparkplug so i'm thinking I could hook it in there and then pass it over the frame so it has something to pull against and then crank away:)

Dunno if it'd work or not but i really am totally stuck with this now.

Get some good penetrating oil down the gap and around the headbolts etc, then pull the head back down using the stock headbolts. After that, use the rope bodge to push the head back up, then pull it back down, up, down etc etc. Each time you make a gap put more penetrating oil in there.

Given up trying to get the head off no matter how much i shoved, wiggled, beat it with a hammer and generally man handled it there was no way it was moving. I've eneded up removing the entire engine which I can then take into work on Monday morning where I can have a go at removing the plug without taking the head off.

A bit pissed off but I suppose at least it means I can give the frame a proper clean and a coat of hammerite on the rusty bits.

It does only seem to be stuck on one dowel but it's got me wondering it's it's been bodged back together by a previous owner as i've removed a few head from both cars and bikes and have never had one that been as stubborn as this. Ho hum, just one of those things, just a shame it had to happen and leave me bikeless on probably the hottest week of the year so far Sad

My guess it that's wrong with it now it that one or more of the studs is corroded and it's jamming in it's tunnel. I suspect some perseverance with penetrating fluid would have done it, but glad you are getting there. Also glad the rope worked!
