Hey,

I'm checking the valve clearances on my SV and I'm wondering which measurement is the correct one to take.

The book I have on doing it says:

Quote:
It should slide in and out with just a bit of friction.

However how do you decide how much "just a bit" is?

I can tell that the 0.10mm feeler guage is too thick however the 0.09mm, 0.08mm and 0.07mm slide in with slightly decreasing amounts of friction.

Is 0.01mm going to make much of a difference when fitting new shims?

Advice much appreciated Very Happy

shims come in 0.05 increments, so it wont matter.

It's something you learn by doing. basically you want it to slide without grabbing or threatening to bend the feeler. If the feeler stops when you try to push it between the cam and bucket, but then can be pushed in with a bit of force - it's too tight. On many bikes you have to bend the feeler a bit to get it to slide smoothly.

As said, you will only get replacements in 5s, so just go for one that will make it a bit to LARGE a gap (smaller shim). On a bucket and shim, the gaps close over time, so by choosing the bigger one, you extend your next service interval!! Thumbs Up

But in actual answer to your question, so you can get the feel for the resistance, if you were to oil up your fingers, then hold the feeler gauge set between your fingers, just such that they don't slip/fall, then pull them by the other hand, that is roughly what you are after resistance wise .... best I can come up with without beign able to physically show you ...
