My bike is insured in lincoln, where i am at university.

I have come home and brought the bike back, and am now off on holiday for a month, so the bike will be garaged at my parents address.

I phoned up my insurance company to tell them it is going to be off the road and garaged in my parents garage for a month. i thought this would be the right thing to do, incase the bike gets nicked while im away.

The thieves just took £50 off me for it being garaged for a month at a different address.

Wish i would have just left it!

Which insurance company is it? Name and shame them.

My money's on Bennetts. It sounds like their M.O.

Having my bike insured in Leeds tripled the price, it hasn't come to Leeds needless to say.

I'm not seeing the reasoning for telling them the bike is going to be parked in a garage at a different address for a week? You have social and domestic as part of your cover right? Falls under that category.

Well that kind of makes sense as Coventry is a much higher risk area than Lincoln so they would charge. If it was stolen from there while you were on holiday for a month then they may ask why it was still insured at Lincoln, so you technically did the right thing but got stung for it. Whether a month is long enough to warrant changing the address depends on the small print in your policy so you should read it really. They should refund you some of that when you move it back to Lincoln, but most of that £50 was probably an admin fee which is non refundable.

I had something similar happen with MCE, insured as ungaraged at my flat, I moved it to Sarah's over the winter months to be garaged and secure, told them and there was no charge but when I brought it home again they tried charging me £100, lots of phonecalls and refusal to pay it resulted in them dropping the fee. In future just be really bloody obstinate, they'll try and get away with what they want if you argue enough they'll eventually realise they're not going to get away with it.
