Ok ... this is a new one for me ... decided to do an oil change today and duly warmed engine up for a minute or so, the usual type of stuff.

Old 5L oil container underneath and undoes the sump bolt ... then watches as 'black water' drains and alarmingly fills the container very quickly ... stops just as it's about to overflow!

Now I'm not daft, knew instantly that something wasn't quite right ... normal oil is 2.6L (3.5L after overhaul), not 5L and also a very strong smell of petrol Shocked

Put a wee drop in a tin lid and put a lighter to it ... sure enough it burns away quite merrily!!

So, fuel injected bike ... not been used for about three weeks due to clutch cable being dodgy and not having any free time to look at it ... what the hell could add about 2.5L of petrol into the sump?

All the best ... Barry

DOH ... it's a carb model .. sorry about that ... so either seal on fuel valve has gone and fuel is leaking through the vacuum hose or the floats in the carbs are stuck open!!

All the best ... Barry

^^^ Only got the bike a short time ago and hadn't been in at it so to say ... mate said he was 99% certain is was fuel injected (now know that didn't happen until 98') and was obviously completely wrong!!

Just hope I've not damaged anything engine wise Sad

All the best ... Barry

Hopefully not.

The only thing is that petrol stops the oil doing its work, so depending on the severity of the leak you might have been running the engine with insufficient lubrication. Things like crank journals and valve stems tend to suffer first. It also causes premature piston and bore wear.
