Hi guys,
This part of the forum seems pretty slow at the moment so i thought i would share with you all planes for my latest adventure.

Went to the Black Sea and back last year. Unfortunately i could only get 2 weeks off work this time and didn't fancy quitting just yet. So going from Friday to Monday i've got 16/17 days to enjoy myself.

My plans might be a little ambitious, over 3,000 miles and time to sight see and enjoy places.

I'll be catching the late Shuttle straight after work on the Friday and camping somewhere in northern France (eww!). From there I plan to stay at or visit:

Saint-Tropez
Cannes
Monaco
<Camp 1 night somewhere on the way to Ancona>
Split
<Camp twice on the way back home>
Norwich

I'll be taking the ZXR750 that i bought off Pyro on these very forums. Since being hit by a woman in a KIA i've been soring the bike out and it should (finguers crossed) be in good shape for June.

My girlfriend will be riding pillion again (at least for some of the way) and i'll be taking my new semi-geodesic tent, after the last one broke on the first day of use.

Any thoughts/opinions?

Lol I play lacrosse, the girl was just along for the ride. I'll be going with a different one this time. She's just bought a new bike jacket for the ride.

I don't envy your girlfriend on that 5 inch square passenger seat!

Good to hear it's still running ok even after your smash.

So here is my route:

https://www.eastcoastlacrosse.co.uk/carl/Screenshot-1.png

My plan is to vist a few places on the south coast of France, Staint-Tropez, Cannes and Monaco (probably base myself around Nice) before heading to Split.

There are a couple of logistical issues. Calais to the south of France is a massive trip and will most likely need to be broken up over two days.

Where would be a good place to camp break up that journey?

Secondly Monaco to Ancona, where i'll be getting the ferry to either split or Zadar, is at least a 6 hour trip. I might need to break this in two, unlikely but it might happen.

Thirdly Split back to Calais is a huge distance. I plan to camp at Camping Berger in Klon on my penultimate night (excellent campsite), but where should I camp before that, Zagreb? Salzburg?

Could get a ferry to North spain (Plymouth-Santander) that would make south france lots closer. Thumbs Up Bit pricy though.

No ferries on any of the days i can leave. could possibly do the trip in reverse and get the ferry back.

Edit - none coming back either. Is Britteny Ferries the only company to go to Santander?

Edit again: It makes no difference. Santander is still over 1000KM from the Cote d'azur

Just make a couple of big days day 1 you just need to get to Dijon south east of there are some fairly good roads so its not that far.

I;d probably skip Lyon in favour of grenoble gap N85 bit. But watch out for Austria they look for people like us (ie non austrians) to go through there a little too fast or find some feeble excuse to fine
foreigners , they even have card machines in the back of the cop cars.

Or take advantage of the Autobahn , and Autoroutes its 4.5 hours to get to the Nurburgring 300 miles.

Or the big one is to airlift your bike out or ship it in advance shipping is fairly inexpensive its the port clearance fees that get you.

Last year Ancona to Torino where I wild camped was a full days riding. Off the ferry at 7:30 found somewhere to camp at about 20:00.

The next day I went from Tornio to Aimes, that was another full day.

Guess I will see how it goes.

I spent a year in Austria, one of ex girlfriends is from Wien. On my way back i'm hoping to ride the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, it looks pretty awesome.

When I came back from my trip my last day was from just north of Dijon back to Birmingham, it wasn't too much IMO, so I'd say Dijon is a good halfway point.

To break up the monotony of the motorway coming back from Gap I took a detour from Dijon to Troyes bypassing the motorway for a while via the N71, about 80miles long. It's a very empty flat road with lots of places to keep your speed up and some nice corners to break it up every now and then. I stopped about 2/3 of the way along at Chatillon Sur Seine for the night, few cheap hotels (maybe not so for 1, but camping I believe) and some WW2 stuff (see my trip thread). I doubt it's quicker than the motorway, probably a bit longer but I'd do it again, and it saves some toll road.

What sort of dates are you going? I'm doing a similarish trip towards the end of June I imagine, but will be skipping the coast and going via the alps to Croatia/Slovenia and then out to Bulgaria and Romania and back via Poland, planning many many miles also with 16 days to achieve, 3 or 4 big mileage days is how I plan to manage.

I plan on avoiding the autoroutes entirely, it can be extremely expensive and last year the when i paid the machine did took my money but didn't discount it from the bill, I rode off and had the police after me.

I managed to do around 80mph on the main A type roads that follow the autoroutes anyway, so they are not that much slower.

My concern this year is that for the big ride days I will have a pillion on the back who gets unconfortable when going from Norwich to Colchester - lol

On a bike to get the 50% discount (in France) you have to use a manned booth, Italy/Spain does not discount for bikes, hence you should make up time in Germany on the Autobahn which is paid for in higher petrol prices.

This is giving me a headache now.

Is there any software where you enter in the towns you want to visit and it works out the best/quickest/scenic route for you and it what order?

I usually only have a rough itinery and don't really plan, but with only two weeks i feel i need to make the most of the time.

Autoroute is good for route planning, don't think it does scenic routes though, just shortest and fastest and avoidances eg. motorways, toll roads.

Just go out there and Riide, hell in two days time I'm supposed to be heading to Vladivostok and yet I've only got a very rough route of how to get there. (this is simplified by the fact that Russia only has one road going all the way across it).

https://www.gebweb.net/optimap/ will do the quickest route.

In terms of finding "interesting" roads rather than the quickest ones, the best deal is to look at maps or ask on motorcycling forums.

Leaving tomorrow straight after work.

All packed up. I'll be arriving in France at 23:30 and looking for a campsite just out of calais for the night. After that its as far south as I can manage in a day.

I found a great campsite in Eze (between Monaco and Nice) but it doesn't open until 16th so i've no idea where i'll stay when there, but it needs to be cheap.

Might want to sort out the campsite in advance or one of those cheapo Premier Classe hotels at £25-30, 11.30 (is that local time or GMT?) is late to be buggering about trying to find a campsite after a days work, long ride and a ferry trip.
