I had 3 tests to do.

The Control: Water
Test 1: ASDA's Smart Price Vinegar (13p per pint)
Test 2: ASDA's Smart Price Cola (17p per 2 litres)

As I only had two spare choke pieces, I did the water test on one, then the cola test on the same piece.
All tests were done for 14 minutes.

Before:

After water:

After cola:

After vinegar:

Vinegar on the left, cola on the right:

Water did very little.

Cola removed quite a bit of the corrosion and dirt, but not as much as vinegar. It was not as harsh as vinegar and underneath the dirt the cola sample was much shinier.

Vinegar removed nearly all the corrosion and dirt but attacked the metal quite a bit leaving it very dull. I put it back in with the cola after the tests and a lot of the dullness disappeared.

Personally I think cola at 8.5p per litre is a bargain degreaser/cleaner and you can drink it too Wink If you have really dirty items though, a bit of vinegar and some ultrasonic sound waves and it'll come up nicely

A word of warning, shake the cola bottle a lot first to remove the gas as when you put it in the cleaner it expands rapidly. I nearly had a messy kitchen.

I usually use either soapy water or paraffin.

Need to be careful using paraffin though. It gets hot.

lemon juice is pretty good, but its acidity leaves things dull pretty much like the viniger. lemonade works aswell maybe has something to do with it being carbonated which gives you more visible bubble formation on the items being cleaned (ultrasonic cleaners will form there own bubbles on things, these bubbles implode taking the dirt etc with them,)
