That's ending up quite near me, but we've got friends down this weekend (Sad) so no riding till Sunday night when they fu.... go back home.

You do know the New Forest is pretty whack for riding round don't you?

Nice scenery, but 40mph limits, shit road surfaces, horses, donkeys and cows that wonder into the road. Just so you know.

Your proposed route is sucky. You want something more like this:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Basingstoke,+Hampshire&daddr=51.206023,-1.370544+to:Unknown+road+to:Unknown+road+to:New+Forest,+Hampshire,+UK&geocode=%3B%3BFUhgCwMdMyjn_w%3BFQAcCQMd2rzm_w%3BFeNNCAMd_BXn_w&hl=en-GB&gl=uk&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=11&via=1,2,3&dirflg=h&sll=51.121627,-1.327972&sspn=0.393489,0.805435&ie=UTF8&ll=50.976588,-1.426506&spn=0.197362,0.402718&z=12

It's 40mph limit around the New Forest, although pretty....you should go over to Dorset (speak to Tonka about the county's beautiful roads and ask for a good route). Failing that, get yourself the other side of the M27/M3 and head off for a good route which includes the A339 (from Basingstoke) picking up the A32/A272 and cross from Hampshire into West Sussex, and back again. Then head down to Loomies cafe for your dinner/pit stop. Thumbs Up

If you do intend on a pit stop at Loomies, I could be persuaded to meet up for a cuppa. Very Happy

I'd probably only DO 40mph, I'd wanna be pootling and sightseeing.
But then ... I'm hard pressed to do more than 40 around town, lol.

Are there any place names in or around the New Forest that are food names.

Cos if there are, I might have a look down there Laughing

Speed limit on unfenced forest roads is definitely 40mph and enforceable. The cameras are mobile and out more frequently in the summer months, so be careful. There is increasing pressure to further reduce the limits to 30mph and currently there are those double rubber monitoring strips out all over the place.

Also, there are lots of foals about at this time of year and they are startled very easily by the noise of bikes, so tbh extra care is needed.

Hellkat - when you say food names do you man places that have names of food or places where the food is well known or made?

Places that have names of food (like "Ham", and "Sandwich") Laughing

I have a plan (not as cool as Babyyam's) to visit places this summer on my bike (or indeed in my car if the whim takes me/us) and take our photos of me (or Andy) (or whoever else is spastic to come with us) eating said name-place food. Corny, but a pastime for those of us who need simple things to amuse simple minds.

So far, my list includes:
Ham
Sandwich
Stilton
Scone (a bit far...)
Bramley (pushing it a bit, I think, but its a single name place so it counts)
Grain
Bean
Cheddar (is that a town or just a gorge?)
and a place in Devon apparently called "Beer" - which should be interesting, as I hate beer, and Andy's gone on the wagon.

We might have to take a beerdrinker with us . . .

Anyway, that's the plan.

No doubt the ponies get out of the way of speeding bikes as well Rolling Eyes . Please feel free to speed there, the Darwin awards could do with an entry concerning how you died penetrating a ponies bottom with your head at 80mph. Thumbs Up

Considering the last few times I've been there I've almost killed ponies and deer at lower than 40mph, speeding probably isn't all that bright.

What sort of time? I work on Saturdays, but I'm just outside Winchester so would be up for joining if I can. Also dependant on having re-assembled my clutch, but yeah..

You don't want to speed in the new forrest, as has been said you can come round a bend to find a pony in the middle of the road. I got the piss taken out of my by my uni friends for not knowing that there would be fairly large animals in the middle of the road. They where all country bumpkins and used to it, me living in a built up area all my life ain't

When passing horses I pull the clutch in, makes a little less noise and they are less likely to be spooked. Mind you, did that the other day and accidentally let the clutch go to early..scared the shit out of the foal I'd just passed Sad
Most of my riding is in the New Forest area, as I live just on the edge of it. You get used to avoiding horseshit in the middle of the road...riding over cattlegrids in winter is fun too.....

God if that encourages you to speed you deserve to penetrate a ponies bottom with your head. Rolling Eyes

Don't forget to pack your waterproofs...it's forecast for rain all day Saturday.

HK...I went to Beer once, purely because of the name. There isn't much there to be honest...although the Youth Hostel is really nice!!

And yes, Cheddar has a few shops and houses once you drive/ride through the Gorge, oh and a great river too. Picturesque.

I have visited Wilton and Axminster, just because of the Carpet connection (I am an ex-textile student, so it had to be done Laughing )

I could be tempted, although the weather would have to be good, what time would you be arriving in the new forest?

So - how did this go? You were lucky with the weather, it stayed dry all day today!!! Albeit a bit windy...and was still quite warm until at least 8.30pm tonight.
