i have lost a second coleman stove first one broke as it has a massive dent from nath falling off i suppose that one went in the bin.

bought another in the uk which was stolen off me on the ferry.

does anybody know what big chain or small chain of shops in France or Italy sells them as i am having to eat take outs which is proving expensive and i doubt that there will be many places for take out in Kazakhstan desert areas. Also this means wild camping isnt as possible unless i eat cold food which isnt nice bad for morale etc anybody know anything and can help?

thanks

If you need an emergency stove a small tin (a small 20p tin of peas) and some meths works wonders. Its a slow boil and you'll need a wind shield unless you're in near calm or a sheltered position. I've used bird wire as a pot stand, but 3 tent pegs should do it. Costs nowt if it gets nicked too, and who nicks an old tin can and a bit of wire?

If you can find a decathlon store they might have Trangia stuff, but I don't think they do Coleman. Optimus and Primus must have stockists in France and Italy if Coleman dont. The Optimus Nova is the bomb Thumbs Up tho its expensive and I'd be really pissed off if mine got taken by some tea leaf Crying or Very sad

The really big hypermarkets sell all sorts of camping stuff. Like a big LeClerk or similar.

You can improvise all manner of alcohol burners using tin cans. Meths, denatured ethanol, surgical spirit and rubbing alcohol (isopronanol) all work well in them.

70% isopropyl alcohol can be "salted out" to about 95% by mixing it with salt in a jam jar. Shake it up then leave to stand. You get a layer of salty water and a layer of pure isoprop..

You can buy drums of ethanol cheaply in French supermarkets, it's calle "Alcohol a brule"

I'd suggest a penny stove as being very efficient and not too tricky to make.

The open burner "pepsi can" type stoves are less fuel efficient but work well.

My own design is VERY easy to make but uses a fair bit of fuel and can be a bit tempremental. I've used petrol instead of alcohol in these too but it makes a mess of your pots and is a significant fire hazard.

A VERY simple petrol stove is an empty tin can with loads of holes punched in it down to about 1/2" from the bottom. Fill the bottom with sand, soak with petrol and light. Again, pretty sooty.

Or consider burning wood. There are a variety of tin can based wood burning stoves you can make that are remarkably efficient.

When I went to France I lived on baguettes and soft cheese, and pickles and salad (homemade, as bought ingredients from a supermarket)...a lot cheaper than eating out!

Not a good diet for those of us who travel by bike for months on end, got to have a stove to cook with.

Oh the irony I finally buy one in Istanbul and yet the food is so cheap in Georgia and Turkey (didn't eat in Azerbaijan as I never had any money left over from the robbery and from paying bribes). that it is pointless to cook for yourself a HUGE meal is less than 3 quid and that includes beer!.

Usually buy from these guys when abroard... more expensive over here as they usually convert the price in euros straight to the price in sterling.
