Guys,

Today i've cleaned my chain with wd40 and brake cleaner, then brushed on some fresh gearbox oil, is this suitable?

I've used chain wax before but found it makes a mess and makes the chain look shite!

Thanks.

The bit I'd worry about is the WD40 (which is often used to clean oil off stuff) and the brake cleaner. Most engine-oily things should be fine to keep the chain lubed.

Oh and it seems using fresh oil is rather a waste, but if looks are important to you, <shrugs>.

Like G I would not recommend the WD40, it can penetrate past the rings and force out the oil.

Never had a problem using the waxes etc myself, but then again don't give a shit what my chain looks like

Gearbox oil is designed for extreme pressure applications and has a high shear resistance. Absolutely perfect for a drive chain in my book.

Hi

Gearbox oil is listed in some bike manuals to use on the chain.

All the best

Hi

WD40 is mostly a chemical very similar to kerosene / paraffin. As such I would be just as dubious about using it as WD40, and would't really want to use a degreasant on a chain anyway (if you wash out any lube from inside the O ring sealed parts it is not likely to get replaced).

To wash a chain just use a tooth brush and some oil.

All the best

Keith

Equally, if the WD40 can get in past the o-ring to wash the lube out, it isn't sealed properly and the lube was probably long gone in any case?

Very true. And if WD40 can damage the O rings then I would expect paraffin to do the same.

All the best
