Hello all,

While I was cleaning and lubricating my chain the other day, i noticed a spot of rust where the paint had flaked off about the size of 50p coin, the rest of the swingarm is fine, as the frame was painted about 8 months before i got the bike.

I did a little search and couldnt find out how to get rid of the rust or what to do after i have got rid of it. And what paint should i use to paint over it and protect it.

Also on a side note, does powder coating last a long time?

thanks in advance, im not really good at the paint side of bikes

if you want a really long lasting job.. take it off and get it powdercoated. its very tough.
the powder coaters will sandblast the swingarm and get rid of the rust..

if you want to do it yourself..
Arrow take it off,
Arrow sand the whole thing down with wet & dry.
Arrow put some rust treatment on the rusty bits,
Arrow sand it down abit more to completely remover rust.
Arrow clean it and then primer it,
Arrow spray a few coats of paint,
Arrow spray a few coats of laquer.
job done Thumbs Up

good good, its always better to try yourself first. you get the satisfaction. Thumbs Up

spray a coat of paint.. wait untill its touch dry, then leave in the sun for 10 minutes..

this will make sure the paint is cooked on and the paint will last longer.
about 4 coats of paint and 5 coats of laquer would be good, as the swingarm takes all sorts of grime.

top tip for laquer - spray untill the surface looks wet and then leave well alone untill its dry.
laquer is thin so it runs easy.

hope this helps Thumbs Up

I would get it powder coated. It's fairly cheap. When i got the swing arm done from the er500 it cost £15, including sandblasting. It would probably cost more than that for paint, primer, lacker, sand paper and rust treatment. Paint is wank, powdercoat is the daddy.

+1

I have a wheel done for £20. That had already been sandblasted though. They said £35 if it needed sandblasting.

Ive been phoning round some today, the prices aint that bad, and from my research powder coating seems like a good protective coating as well.

so i think il get my swing arm powder coating as it seems easy enough to remove, and il work on getting the frame powder coated soon, once i get my head around , if i trust myself to be able to put everything back together, but its a challenge i suppose, thanks for everyones help Thumbs Up
