Im a bit predjudiced against flip front helmets, but would someone doing a trackday get turned away if they showed up with a flip front helmet ?

I don't think you can, but I'm not completely sure. All places tend to say a full face lid, and I would take that to mean a proper full facer, since some flip up lids are essentially an open face lid with a crappy chain bar.

Also lots of flip up helmets are submitted to be tested to the ECE standard as an open face helmet, so the chin bar is never tested, and thus they are classed as an open face helmet and therefore not legal to be used on track.

However as for how to tell the difference between a flip up that's been submitted to the open face, or the full face test I have no idea.

It's usually an ACU gold stickered helmet they ask for. I doubt many flip front lids have such a sticker, but my Shoei Multitec does so I could probably argue the toss.

Wouldn't, though. Full face for track use for me.

The flip front helmet someone i know has, has a gold acu sticker.

Personally, I think it will be worth him getting a full face helmet, as I share the view that in a crash, they are about as safe as an open face helmet.

It does sound like the gold sticker might get him through, but I don't think its worth the risk, either missing out on a trackday thats already paid for, or getting hurt.

tis me colin is referring to Very Happy

although i do agree the flip front is probably not as tough as a proper full face i think funds are going to be extremely tight for the trackday trip as i still have to pay for the trackday when i arrive, plus the fact that my current tyres are the ones i was hoping to be using for said trip now need replacing due to a puncture Rolling Eyes so the money i planned to save in the next few weeks is going to be going on new tyres Sad

so now starting from scratch with only a few weeks to save, it's going to be tight, will see how it goes money wise but i think i will just ring the trackday people and check to see if the flip front is ok or not before i go spending money i may need for the general cost's of the trip.

Mate used a flip front one on a No Limits trackday. No problem at all. Wasnt even mentioned. Just checked on the back that it had the gold sticker

Leathers were checked (if 2 piece that they zipped) and helmet

If in doubt ring the circuit / track day organiser

Or use it as an excuse to get a new helmet. Smile

If it's got the gold sticker it'll be allowed, I've had a flip fronter with the sticker. But I've also crashed in it and the chin bar instantly flipped up.

No fucking way would I wear one on track.

i've never been really big on personal safety and quite happy to take the risk if they let me, i'm the same at work with grinders and other potentially lethal power tool's Laughing never wear any form of safety gear at work........ just the way i am......stupid i guess in some people's opinion but i always see it as my body, my risk, my choice.

Well there are limits to stupidity. But if you have to wear a helmet, you may aswell wear one that actually stands some chance of protecting you.

I'm guessing you've never had a decent off on a bike? It certainly makes you thank the quality of your gear. Or if you weren't wearing it. Makes you wish you wear.

Same with seatbelts. If you crash without it, you'll sure wish you were wearing it.
