So today whilst working on the bridge a spitfire flew over. Now Ive seen a couple before but they were flying flat and slowly.

This one was something else! Looping, rolling, for a good 15 minutes over the river severn. Then for a finale it flew at full pelt just above the 2 towers.
My god it sent a chill down my spine, such a beautiful sound, such a beautiful aeroplane. It made going to work worth it today.

Did anyone else in bristols see it? it seemed to sod off that way after showing off to us.

I was stuck in a lab all day so no I didn't Sad still they are stunning planes, I've seen them flying many times as my Dad was in the RAF and he used to take me to see them a lot.

I still remember seeing a low flying hurricane spitfire and a lancaster bomber fly over when I was away cycling when I was younger, an incredible sight to say the least.

Yeah I saw the battle of britain memorial fly by too when I was younger, but they were all at a steady speed.
This was like letting a dog out to play after it had been couped up for 2 days.
The plane actually looked like it was having fun!

I remember an airshow at Biggin Hill when I was ten, before the health & safety nazis had come to power. We were standing about 100 feet from the edge of the runway while a Spitfire beat it up a number of times at about 100ft altitude, full bore. It made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Absolutely glorious. Thumbs Up

Have had a spitfire flyover once, was a beautiful noise but not a good vantage point to see it do much.

The time I saw two jets (god knows what, based in Anglesey RAF) fly at my level or lower, whilst stood at the side of Ogwen lake (a lake in a valley between some hills/mountains) was awesome though.

Could be Hawks... They have a few of them down there, for training fighter pilots and such (IIRC red arrows pilots are trained in hawks too)

We have a p.51 Mustang fly over our house about twice a week. Not sure where he's from, or what he's up to, but it always makes me smile! We also get a lot of low level supersonic jets over head too... Real shake the foundations sort of stuff, they're usually tornados. See Spitfires on several occasions too. Just one of the perks of living way out in the stix!

I can't wait for the good ole Lowestoft Airshow again this year. Get a good few spitfires and the like as well as some new jet. And all while sat on the beach with a nice beer!

For free!!!

Last year they had :

Red Arrows, The Blades, RAF Typhoon, Team Guinot Wing walkers, Tigers Parachute Display Team, Spitfire, Tucano, Search and Rescue Demonstration, Hawker Hunter, Apache, Swordfish, P40, Kittyhawk, BBMF, Spitfire, Dukes of Cassutt and the Vulcan

The Vulcan has to be the most impressive thing I've seen in all the years that they've been doing the show

Well either the vulcan or when some bloke ditched a harrier into the sea! Mr. Green

Who else has had the urge to run around their back garden, arms outstretched, thumbs pointed forwards going 'Neeeeeeeooooooooooww, dakka dakka dakka dakka, neeeeeeeeooooooooooww'?

Ok, just me then.

Fly pasts are good, but seeing them at play is even better. I remember watching filming of the final scenes of 'Saving Private Ryan', where a 'squadron' of P-51's save the day - there was actually only 1 plane, but i spent ages just watching it come diving in, beat up the set, climb away, and then roll back around for another pass. Fantastic stuff, could only have been better if it was a) a Spitfire, and b) i was flying it.
Neeeeeoooooooowwwwww, dakka dakka etc

I think it would be cool to fly a Spitfire before I died,
I'll add it to my list when I start a list.

One of the coolest things I've ever seen with my own eyes was when I was walking the west side of our very own Malvern Hills about this time last year with a few people and 3 Tornado's came out of no where, dog fighting almost... Steeply ascending, looping, going out of sight and then returning, purely awesome stuff. Thumbs Up

Just seen this - OP I know how you must have felt...

Three years ago we had just moved in to our new house and I was in the garden on a nice summers day. Our house is on the side of a valley with the garden sloping down and the house quite a bit higher up with some decking at the rear. I was on the decking looking out along the valley (you can see for a few miles in either direction - houses everywhere etc but a fair few trees as well) when I began to hear a faint rumble in the distance..

When "FODDDDDUUMMMMMFOODDDDD!!!!" a Spitfire and another slightly smaller old plane flew amazingly low over the house from behind me and banked and rolled their way into the valley and after a twist and turn (imitating a dogfight) disappeared over the valley top opposite.

A truly spectacular sight, the hair was up on the back of my neck and everything.

Thumbs Up Shocked

(There was an airshow nearby I later found out)

Recently whilst browsing through the worksop manuals at a local store I came across a Haynes manual for The Spitfire.

Boring but true!

ZRX, little tip with Duxford.

Go up the day before and visit. All you see all day is them practicing. No bullshit MC, no crowds, no shit music.

No planes ragging about all day.

Anyone heading to the Lowestoft air show this year?

I always wonder as you also have the Eastern Light bike cavalcade thing on the weekend as well?

I doubt many are, it's seems quite out of the way for most people on here.

i went to southend air-show this year. had some absolutely glorious weather - best in years. it was a shame the performance was sooooo disappointing this year. the best things there were the battle of Britain Memorial flight, the typhoon (OH MY FVCKING GOD THAT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD!!!!), the apache is always fun to watch and of course the read arrows. still a fun day though
i may end up going lowestoft if the vulcan is flying. That thing looks soooooooo awesome
