PostPosted: 19:01 - 08 Jun 2009    Post subject: So We've Been Scammed On eBay... Reply with quote

Basically my little brother recently purchased a laptop from eBay for just over £400. The seller had 115 positive feedback (eBay username: certifiedkingpin) so he paid the money using a bank transfer, and a day later the sellers account became 'no longer registered as a user' and we received an email from eBay saying that the advert has been removed and the deal is null and void as the seller broke eBay rules, the specific details; they aren't allowed to tell us about. To add to this, within the last 2 days he has recieved 3 negative feedback but he has now made his feedback private. The laptop was supposed to arrive within 2-3 working days and it has now been 4 working days. I'll wait another day or two before I try anything but I'm not too sure what to do now if it doesn't arrive.

What do you guys recommend I try to do? all useful advice is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

More importantly, do you have his address?

Try and phone ebay.

No we don't, all we have are his bank details. Is there anyway to find out his address?

You think I should phone eBay and ask their advice?

^^ wasnt in there on the first edit.
Id say your pretty stuffed, your only line is going seeing if your bank will give you any protection (i doubt this)
or take it up with the police as fraud?

You're stuffed I'm afraid. I paid for an engine via bank transfer on eBay, never saw the money again. I had the Police out, they said it's not fraud, it's a civil matter so go to court. Took him to court, he never showed so I won the case, then baliffs never managed to track him down.

As much as I despise Paypal, when you're buying stuff it makes sense to use it.

Definately phone ebay - although they are only offering the number out to limited numbers at the moment. I had a problem recently with an item being broken on arrival with me then lost on return post. Seller was getting arsey saying he would do nothing so called ebay and they immediately refunded me directly and said they would take up the issue withe seller themselves. Something about wanting to be perceived as doing all they could to make ebay a safe place for buyers.

That said - if you paid outside ebay/paypal then it may be a different story and could be why they say the sale is null and void. If no joy with ebay then guess police would be my next stop although cant see them devoting too many man hours to sorting it out for you.

Best of luck

Be nice if someone could hack his ebay account if the account is still somewhat active, which it must be if he can change his feedback.

If I recall there were some on here who were dabbling in brute forcing.
That would give you immediate access to his details right there.

Granted might be a bit risky if his account is already under review.

Short of that, when you're walking down the street tomorrow punch some random in the face and tell them Bruce sent you.
Should at least make you feel better.
If not, repeat each day until it does Thumbs Up

Brute forcing can take days depending on the legnth of the password. A lot of sites lock the accounts after a set amount of failed log-in's now to prevent brute forcing.

I like to throw ideas around that I know nothing about. It keeps my creative juices flowing.
It's either that or have a vagina put in.
This is cheaper, less messy and far less painful.
Not that I've ever had one put in. But I know a few c&nts and they're painful enough. No offense Sv650 Smile

My more serious response was below that one.
Bruce is an excellent name and I think every opportunity should be taken to use it when the chance presents itself.

eBay are crap, if they won't open an 'item not received dispute' (with ebay, not paypal) then they'll do nothing. eBay have reams of small print they prefer you don't see. So much so, I don't use it or paypal anymore.

However, casting about on eBay (via yahoo search,) you can see certifiedkingpin did buy things using that account, the seller's account still shows the feedback (but not what he/she bought.) In this instance on the 28th of May he/she purchased an item from gucci_businessman who still has an active profile within eBay.

There are others, lights999 for example but that profile is no longer registered...

It might be possibly to contact this gucci_businessman and ask or try and extract the address he sent it to... Personally, I'd favour buying something from him then 'noticing' on his feedback page that he'd sold something to an ebay member who'd bilked you for four hundred quid... If you're buying something, he may (or may not) be inclined to supply you with details...

There may be other eBay sellers who have sold stuff to certifiedkingpin, might be worth trawling about and contacting all of them...

Just do a yahoo search on certifiedkingpin (then filter out the certified kingpin results as he seems to be an up and coming rapper...)

In terms of phoning eBay, how does one fall into gails of laughter on here? Phoning eBay is like wading through dairylea cheese: You just can't.

Thumbs Up

Firstly, thanks to everyone who replied, I know it's not exactly the most interesting thread but this guys clearly a bastard and I full well intend to either get my money back or find out where he lives to have a little 'chat'. I got this from the bank details he sent me:

Account Holder: C Aujo and from the eBay listing it said the item was in Wiltshire, so I assume he lives there. He used a Lloyds TSB account, we also used our Lloyds TSB bank account, so would this make any difference when I try to go to get my brothers money back from the bank?

Pabroon, I tried the Gucci eBay member but it says he doesn't exist when I searched for him on eBay community. Thanks again.

You won't be able to use the bank to get the money back....

Transfers have no protection.

You need to report to the police.

Ok, so i'm bored and putting off doing real work.

gucci-businessman is an ebay member, however the vast majority of his sales have been private auctions for "charity donations". In other words, very low value auctions for no goods and just a positive feedback. It's a simple way of mutual positive feed-back building to allow additional features of ebay to be opened up.

You won't get anywhere with Gucci, unless he can tell you the pay-pal address that it came through. He's as much of a scammer as the one who's done you.

HTH.

As said, you will get no help from the bank. Once the money has gone that's it, it's gone.
