Up to now I've been using 2 decent U-locks
(either one through a wheel and inter-twined with the other one around an un-movable object or just one on each wheel and).

I've also a swaged cable from B&Q that can be threaded through the U-lock then both wheels or around a stationary object, but this is of the "stop-an-opportunist" style

I also try to park next to other, more desirable, bikes...

Chains are versatile, but any that are heavy enough to be 'secure' are cumbersome monsters are possibly only as strong as a good U-lock and as the object they're wrapped around anyway.

Is there a decently secure 'cable' type lock available?

Are the 'mini' U-lock disc locks any more secure than the cast disc locks?

Where are you trying to chain?

Is it a regular place like work? If so leave the chain around the immobile object you chain it to, and buy another for home.

For ad hoc stops on ride outs you tend not to be too far from the bike so a large chain is a bit OTT

Depends if you value your bike, if you do you put up with heavy security.

It's always going to be a compromise though.

What the best disc locks? Mini shackles or the small cast ones? I'd be inclined to trust the shackle type (with a decent lock mechanism)

anybody know of any secure cable type locks?

Work isn't too bad as there is something to lock it to, it's in full view, under surveillance and between a load of cars.

I'm thinking more along the lines of locking to a bike rack in town etc.

It takes less than 30 seconds to lift a bike into the back of a van, with or without an alarm going off if not secured properly.

May as well use a cheap as chips disc lock/u-lock/chain as a deterrent if its not going to be secured properly.

If you have a 'standard' chain i would advise against it.

I have heard stories and read about theives clocking onto people that leave their chains at the location (ie work), they come back during the night with all the heavy gear they need, pull back the material cover, cut on of the links and then replace it with a cable tie, pull the material back over and the rider would have no idea his chain is tampered with. Then they just come back whenever, snip the cable tie and away...

I mean how often do you check every link in your chain? i can barely stand touching the more often than not dirty, wet thing...

You then run into the issue of the static object needing to be tougher than the chain itself.

Bike locking stands aren't always that substantial.

A large oak tree or concrete lamp-post might be up to it, but will require a fair length of chain.
