I got a new (to me) boat! ... so tried it out!!

First day I tried (yesterday) it was going fine, then 'caught' in a turn and took on water* ... cut the engine and sank the boat!! Crying or Very sad ... but I went in and fished it out!! Thumbs Up

I then bought some expandable foam and filled all areas I could with it ... it looks a bit of a mess, but there is no way it can sink now!! Wink

Anyhoo ... Its a racing boat this time - a .35 marine IC engine with a tuned pipe, my other boat has a .12 and stock pipe, so I was quite excited about the new boat!

Here is a vid taken today (after putting foam in).

Its a bit small to see, but you get the idea!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BLE99x_ur4&fmt=18

It is now blatantly obvious that this type of boat needs a flat calm surface. It was a little breezy and a few waves, the boat clearly doesn't like the waves as it seemed to nose in and cut the engine/fill up with water!

I think it'll be quick on a smooth lake, but those days are few and far between, so where is the fun in that?!!?

*if you look in this vid at 1:18 it 'catches' and takes on water like it did on the first day ... but this time with my foam, it doesn't sink (the engine drowns/just cuts) ... so it gently/eventually floats back to the side rather than me having to go in and get it! Thumbs Up

'Tell you what sonny-Jim ... you run down the lake beside it to the other end and see if you can keep up' ... Very Happy

I think on a flat lake its gonna have a fair turn of speed actually (you can see it quite nippy in the vid (and I couldn't get it fully on pipe due to water) ... but in all honesty, I am more into flicking it about and jumping over wave crests than drag racing ... sadly this thing clearly doesn't like/isn't designed to be flicked about!! Sad

Any way of sticking a gear box into it?

Always wanted to turn my schumacher xtr213e into a boat. Had the idea of locking the diffs and then run the driveshafts to some props or impellers and see what happens Mr. Green

It looks like a rather old one, Doesn't it have a cover?
plastic, wood or fibreglass hulled?
I'm surprised it's not too good on slightly choppy water with a .35 engine, would have thought it would rip through the water,
Not that i know a great deal about boats, but my Hypers got a .21 and it wizzes along at a good 50mph....
I'd like a boat to go with my car and chopper, oh and one of the Thunder tiger ducati nitro powered RC bikes..

Its an 80s job I believe! It doesn't have a cover no. Its fiberglass and I think the reason it doesn't like the waves is that it sits so low in the water, the front digs into a wave and the open engine bay takes on water ... not only is that bad, but it puts the engine out (sucks in water).

I am not sure if its just how they are or if it is where someone has tried to put an oversize lump in it and it is therefore to heavy for its size ....

I think on a flat lake it'd really rip some though if I could get it 'on pipe'!! Thumbs Up

Not just one glow plug, your toolbox should have multiple glowplugs in. All different heat ratings so you can change them dependant on the weather.

Its also a good idea to keep 2 or 3 of each of the common ones so if one does fail then you have a replacement.

Don't be suprised if you get a dud glowplug straight out of the packet, it happens, not very commonly but it does so don't go whinging at the modelshop if it does happen to you Razz

You could be correct about it being an over sized engine,
Maybe an nice new Deep vee hull and some nice Stern rudders could be the solution,
I looked into boats a while ago before getting the Hyper but living in central London the only place big enough to use one is the Thames, and i really didn't like the thought of wading into that to fish out a stalled boat...

I find Medium to medium hot Plugs are about the best to use and 20% Bryons race fuel in RC cars...

Bigger engines just mean more torque and not more speed .21 engines rev higher and revs = more wheel revolutions and obviously more speed, then find a two speed and wayhey,
The big block engines .28 and upwards are designed for monster trucks really which need the torque for climbing over bloody big things..

Or a three speed Mr. Green Thumbs Up

he is using a drift car which would probably benefit from a .21 something like a picco or cheap thunder tiger pro21. Thumbs Up

Sv yup it was a 3d plane got the plans from the local model club flew the simulators perfect come to think of it flew the plane perfect to.... Untill the landing. The simulator makes you forget the fact you only get one chance at the landing bit Mr. Green
