PostPosted: 19:36 - 05 Jun 2009    Post subject: Homemade Rust Eater Reply with quote

So its friday night and the weekends a washout according the forecast.
So i decided to rip my downpipes off as they are looking a tad rusty from the winter.
Has anyone got any suggestions for how to remove the rust from all the hard to reach areas?
Any homemade coctails using household chemicals?
Cheers

distilled would probably be better, you can see through it to tell how it's getting on. (I don't think the distillation process removes anything important)

like the idea but dont have the kit or 4 days to play with Smile
Need to get them back on the bike for monday.
I'm saving up for some stainless downpipes so these only have to last another few months or so.

You could try soaking a cloth or cotton wool in the vinegar and then wrapping it so that it's in contact with the difficult to reach bits and then cover in clingfilm to keep it from drying out?

That's what you do with taps to get rid of limescale, so not sure if it work on your pipes, but it'd certainly require less vinegar! Wink

Forgot to post the results of the vinegar rust eater Smile
The vinegar removed most of the surface rust and loosened the hard to reach areas making it easier to remove with a wire brush.
The results.....drum roll please.....

So what did you actually do, buy enough vinegar to soak downpipes in a bath or something else?

I've been using a small vinegar bath to sort out some bits but can see rather a lot being needed for a set of downpipes...

I know, that's where I got mine. But it's still a lot of vinegar and a big tub to submerge a set of pipes in so I wanna know if he did that or if it was a wrapping in soaked rags kinda thing.

I've got some very rusty downpipes on my project bike and may give it a go at some point.
