I've spent the past couple of days at a UK skills competition in London, so after finishing today (got bronze) I was heading back to Bristol with my mate in his Jeep Cherokee, was going well apart from the traffic on the M25, until his temperature gauge shot up to the danger reading so we pull over just after the M40 turn off.

We popped the bonnet to find one of his coolant hoses had a small crack in it and coolant was gushing out of it, our thought was shit. We didn't have a lot of tools with us so our plan to bodge it back together was to cable tie a rubber glove around the hole and fill the radiator with all the water we had and then hope we could make it to the nearest petrol station/garage/wherever we could get some duct tape to seal the hole better.

Anyway as we were sat waiting for the engine to cool down (I was sat at the back of the car with a sign asking for duct tape) the traffic wombles roll up. My thought was great they're gonna close the lane for this or something equally useless. Anyway turns out they've got a roll of electrical tape in the car, so I took it and wound it round the pipe sealing the hole nicely. They filled up the radiator with water and filled up all of the spare bottles we had with water and went on their way.

The fix held and about half way along the M4 we got a call from some girl in a call centre to check we'd managed to get going again.

So yeah we were saved by the wombles today, so I take back what I've said about them before they do have some uses.
