Ok, my best friend is turning 20 in July and we were thinking a trip to the dam? Now Iknow it's been asked before...

We want to find the cheapest way there and back and possibly staying for only 1 or 2 nights and have a wild time basically.

Anyone enlighten me/us? Laughing

Much love Very Happy

We went by bus...with a trip in the local area, something silly like £60 with an overnight stay on a boat, which sailed off to Volendam and back, and then one night in a seedy hotel in the heart of the 'Dam.

It was brilliant, we travelled via the tunnel, and not once - there or back were we asked to show our passports, or get off the bus, or anything. Cool

First time I went it was me and a couple of mates. On the Wednesday we said "it'd be cool to go to Amsterdam" (I'd recently been busted for some hash, if I remember, which may have been something to do with it.) Booked some ferry tickets on Thursday. I packed a t-shirt, a camera and a tooth brush, possibly some underwear and socks, but not so sure Confused.
Wandered around at 2am until we found somewhere to stay, which happened to be above a 24hour coffee shop, which was nice.
In later years it's not gone so well with similar tactics and we've ended up sleeping on the street pretty much for one night.
So, err, my advice would be to book ahead.

As for the rest, you really don't need to 'try' to party in Amsterdam - just be aware of where you're spending your money and how much you're spending!

Sleazy Jet, then free train to Central Station and off you go. From the station you're close to Haarlemerstaat which has got lots of good coffeeshops on it.

This hotel is in a good location and fairly cheap. Not the classiest of places (window needed fixing with gaffa tape Laughing), but that doesn't really matter when its just somewhere to sleep. This place is a bit more expensive, nicer hotel, but a bit further away from everything.

A copy of this map is useful for finding your way around. Trams are free, just don't get on the ones with ticket inspectors. Razz

Good coffeeshops to to go... Dampkring, Barneys, Abraxas, Greenhouse Effect, Rokerij, Bushdoctor, Grey Area, and Dolphins. Mr. Green

And go to Dutch Flowers just to see the unfriendly rude fucktard behind the bar. Laughing

Yes, it was a few years ago, and we were on the Granny bus, but we were laughing really. It was a superb trip.

been a few times, 15 hours on a 350 ypvs and ferry?

fly! every time, been for 1p return before now, takes an hour and you're there, a weekend trip on a bike or bus takes too much time, especially when you consider you can have an extra overnight if you fly

best fun is going early evening, and catching a flight back at 4am, back home before the G/F wakes up!

Not going to get better than that per person, but consider the petrol costs and added time too - also that you'll probably want to be in an ok-ish state to drive back.
I'd look and see if you can get cheap flights, were it me.

I did check petrol costs and stuff and it'll cost roughly 20 quid per person to get there and back.. So it's jsut a case of finding a hostel or something.

Think we found somewhere for 36 per person for 2 nights. And Yes I have checked about me being in a state to drive Laughing
