Going to Royal Ascot tomorrow. Only in the silver ring so I am not wearing a suit but will be wearing smart trousers and shirt. Tie in pocket in case it is necessary.

I am going because it's free if I help out with drinks and food in the morning.

Anyway does anyone do betting or know anything about racing.

What the hell is good to firm going and some of the horses have stupid name or is that the riders...sorry I mean jockeys. Wink

Having a look on the racing post website at the 6 races planned I understand none of it.

I fear that my idea of a day at the races will turn out to be a day getting wankered on the coach.

What is the general idea when we get there? Is it just drink? Can you actually see any racing from the silver ring?

Thanks

is the ground some horses will prefer differing conditions (like how some GP riders are better in in the wet than dry)

tis normally just the horses that have the silly names Laughing

Been to Cheshire RC and Newbury with the wifes company on corporate days, had a right good time.Normally put 2 bets on each race, fiver each on the nose.I pick 2 horses normally by the good odds,so playing safe really, have left with a few quid in my pocket.I'm a bit lost when it comes to following form as i don't go often enough.

I go racing regularly - Ascot is a pretty good day out although fighting through the crowds is a bit of a pain.

There will be bookies on course set up in rows with their own little stall - If you're new at it half the fun is picking your horse and then finding the best price from the numerous bookmakers on course.

EDIT - just found a picture that I took at Cheltenham Races where you can see the bookies stalls with their odds boards (some are computerised, some are hand written)...

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a231/steveqpr/bookies.jpg

When you're placing the bet prior to the race just give them the following details - the amount that you're placing on the nag and the number of the horse, for example...

'Ten quid on number 8'

...that's it, no names, no odds, no fuss.

Check your slip as the bookie gives it to you (it'll be printed out on a little machine and given to you once you've handed over your cash) which will contain your chosen horse, the odds and the potential return. To redeem it just return after the race (not immediately - that's for over eagernoobs Wink ) and hand it over - simple.

There are each way bets, forecasts, tri-cast, accumulators, etc but my advice would be to have a betting budget for the day (for example a fiver a race will cost you £30) and treat that cash as a necesarry loss. Then you can just get on with picking your horse and sticking your budgeted amount on the nose - it makes the day easy, less confusing, fun and enjoyable Thumbs Up

Im gonna go a fiver on each race like you say.

Can you place all your bets at the beginning for all 6 races then at the end go back and collect any winnings?

How do they know I am 18? Do they ask for id or something as well?

Thanks Karma

They will most probley ask for ID if they think you are too young.

Brilliant day out. Loads of cops everywhere which annoys me but still good. Everyone on the trip enjoyed themselves and I would thoroughly recommend for any age. Plenty of food and drink available and a few people I went with including myself didn't fully know what to expect but I will definitely be going again.

Won bets on the first 2 races on the nose
3rd race won each way
4th, 5th and 6th I lost Sad

Overall £10 down I think but was worth it.
