Just received 2 emails claiming to be from the Tax Office telling me I am due a refund. I am quite sure this is a scam email as it asks you to click on a link and enter details (I did not click on the link in case of virus) and also I had 3 years worth of tax paid back last year so am probably not due anything. The amount stated is small enough to be believable but large enough to be tempting (£188). Please be careful.

If you google Tax Rebate Scam

the Tax Website comes up with a list of known email addresses and examples of said scams.

Check your email against their list, and don't disclose any details as they wouldn't contact you via email in the first place, instead usually via post or phone.

I don't think they'd email you about that sort of thing. Wouldn't the write to you properly, or not at all and just send you a cheque or deduct it in bits from your income tax for the next year?

Tax office? What the hell is 'tax office'?

My correspondence from the tax man comes from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, aka HMRC. And, never by email.

Better double check you're not being scammed, it's the HMRC Wink

I got an email saying I was due a tax rebate of £168K, naturally I was a bit taken aback.

I can beat that, I got a rebate and a letter and cheque for £10,407.00.

Cashed it naturally, but got a letter through from my bank saying that the cheque had been stopped. C&R sent a letter saying there was a user error that caused the wrong amount to be sent, and a cheque for £104.07. I was most disappointed.

I win, 2 years ago I got back £1,700 from the tax demons.
It only took me 2 years to phone them, write them, get the right form, post form, wait three months because their mail office is three months behind, then they send the cheque out after they've read your form, thought up ways to weasel out of it, realised it was solid, they cried, they sent cheque. If they had done it instantly I would've got less back, because I stopped working for 8 months of the tax year, so they had to refund the legit tax from the first 4 months.

From then on, I and the bicycle feelings deeper.

Not admitting to where I work, but it is a scam. You would never be contacted by email for a tax rebate!
