next problem possible overheating?

my suzuki ts125r on the temp guage seems to warm up very fast then shoot up to maximum in seconds its got water in it.im fairly sure there is no air lock ive taken the water pump cover off and its like new in there when it warms up the radiator is also hot so it would seem like water is circulating ok so could the temp sender be at fault
if anyone has any ideas please let me know

could well be a faulty thermostat, take it out & test it. you can do this by putting it into a container of hot water, wait a minute & see if it opens up, if it doesn't then its banjoed.

as the rad was hot i thought that would not be an issue as the stat prevents water from going into the rad untill it reaches temperature and opens the stat so if it was faulty the rad would be cold and the engine red hot ?

i'd still replace the thermostat, the rad in my van is hot before the stat opens,
, maybee you have a dodgy gasket in there somewhere, although i fail to see how that would affect a 2 stroke

may be just try and run with no thermostat at all, and see if that makes a difference, are tou sure your water pump is working???

Fair point, are you sure about the water circulating ok? did you take the radiator cap off when the bike is warm not hot (don't want to be responsible for scalding you) & see if the coolant is getting swished around? maybe a faulty water pump. You can check if the the temperature sensor is banjoed by whipping it out & measuring the resistance with a multimeter. wouldn't know the reading off hand but it should be in the manual.

when i had the water pump cover off i span the engine and the pump was turning fine and it was all looking like brand new the bike has only done 9k miles but has been stood for some time

try replacing the water. i had a similar problem on an AR125, where the water had sludged up blocking one of the pipes. Drain all the fluid, and wash out with loads of tap water. remove all the pipes and check they are clean, no black goo. hopefully any blockage is not present in the block, otherwise its a pain to clean! Either way, if its been stood a while, its adviseable to give fresh fluids.

2 strokes are cooler running engines by design, piss off the thermostat all together and see if that helps. Make sure your water pump is working. And with the thermostat out - make sure you warm the bike up properly as there will be no restriction in place nd will take longer to reach operating temp.

Temp gauges and such are often built with deliberate dead spots and non-linear responses in them so as not to worry people too much (i.e. they are there for fancy only), and as such they need to be matched to a specific sender. If the sender is broken or it the wrong one but the bike isn't actually overheating, it might just look funny.

Don't take the thermostat out without putting a restrictor in it's place, it'll mess up the cooling system.

take the bike out for a normal ride/normal route - but stay reasonably close to home ... ride around and if the bike starts to spit out water/steam from the overflow tank then ull know its definitely overheating ... if it doesnt then like the others say here it cud just be the sender or the gauge giving false readings.

if it steams tho then let it cool before heading home so as not to damage the engine!
