When you produce documents at a police station, do they just look at them and stamp to say ok or do they for instance phone insurance to make sure its valid?

Thanks Thumbs Up

Police have access to a central database with details of all insured vehicles and MOTs in the country so checking is simple and instantaneous so I would be surprised if they didn't check at some point

Depends on why they pulled you in the first place,if it was because your plate was showing no insurance they will probably check it out,but if you have insurance you don't need to worry about it,do you?

If the computer said no insurance they would have seized the vehicle.

Every producer I ever had they just looked over the docs and filled out a form. I think they must have given you a producer because they had no access to their database. You should be ok - desk staff are usually civilians anyway.

Whenever I have produced documents I'm sure they have disappeared into 'the back' for ten minutes or so and kept me waiting. I have always assumed that they have been checking the validity of the documents. Even if they stamp your form and send you away I am sure they will check them at some point.

Every time i've had to hand in documents (8-10times) they've taken a photo copy but I don't know if they've ever checked out the validity of insurance docs.

I always thought that was the case too, but last week I was proven wrong. My mate had a nasty off and once he'd been taken care of the bike cop checked our bikes over. He warned me that the rear was just under the limit and that also the system was showing no insurance on my bike.

I was starting to expect him to say they was sending a flat bed out to collect it but he just gave me the retification slip and ticked the boxes saying he wanted to see my insurance certificate and license.

I just been in today to get it sorted, and whilst they don't check the insurance there and then they certainly do copy the certificate number. I'm assuming this is to do further checks at a later date?

The official name for a producer is an HO/RT1. When you produce at the Police station, the copper taking the details will complete what is called an HO/RT2.

In simple terms he completes a statement to say that he has examined the documents requested for inspection. If they are in order he simply ticks the box to that affect, if more information is required, for example insurance details or licence details after a crash, that information will be completed in full, and offences seen will also be recorded.

This statement is then signed and sent onto the issuing officer whilst a copy remains on file. If offences have been reported, then these notes being made at the time can be tendered in evidence.

If any offences are noted, for example no MOT or no licence, then this statement also provides the evidence for the stopping officer to submit what is called a DQ1 and VQ1 to DVLA at Swansea which requests the licence details of the driver back to date of first issue, or details of date of first registration for MOT offences.

The use of the Ho/RT2 is not so common these days given the electronic facilities now available, but it is still an option, particularly in accident situations where it is often deemed a more compassionate way of dealing with drivers allowing to get over the shock before having to worry about getting their documents out!
