1997 GS500, very clean, Full tax and ticket, 15K miles, 6 month dealer warrentee
No idea what tyres and other consumables are like, so I'll say theyre all ~6 months old
https://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs099.snc1/5200_99333727679_510497679_2539316_7920416_n.jpg

Anyway, what would you expect the asking price to be, and what would you pay if you where in the market for that sort of thing.

What it's worth and what it's listed for are two different things.

I'd probably not pay more than £800 for a bike that old but then I'm a snob.

Reckon £1250?

for that gs500 i's pay no more than £900, although it looks in very good condition and has a fairing, which is quite sought after amongst gs owners.

i say £900 would be a fair estimate.

Depends on who's buying?

New rider might pay a bit more, inexperience, need of a low insurance 500. Maybe £1k-1.2k.
Someone just after a hack probably wouldn't pay much over £800 for a GS, despite the reasonable mileage.

Personally I wouldn't pay more than 500 for a 97 gs, but I wouldn't bother looking for one so clean. In fact if I wanted another 500 twin I'd look for an MOT fail wreck pay fuckall then sort it out myself.

Anyway the situation, a friend of mine is getting into biking. I'm helping her out and offering advice etc. I told her to definatly not put money down on a bike till she's at least done her CBT and preferably her full test.

She's put a deposit on that. the price is 1700 quid

dunno weather I should tell her to say no and lose her deposit. On the one hand it is an insane price, and she could get a lot more bike for the money, or keep a lot more in her pocket.

On the other hand I'd feel shit if she did say no and what she bought instead turned out to be a dog. Plus more bike doesn't really matter to a new rider.

I think I'll keep my mouth shut. It's her money.

fucking hell tristan mate, thats extortionate!

Id be telling her now, im sure she'd rather lose £50 or whatever the deposit than pay that for a bike which will destroy her sole upon resale.

a mate just did the same thing with an sv650, paid 1600 for a shitter which now doesnt run.

Shocked

I think I paid less than that for a '98 ER5 with similar mileage... FIVE years ago!

My 97 CBR900 was £1700. I know which I'd rather.

Personally I would tell her. When I was a noob I relied on thems in the know to guide me, whatever they had to say.

The shop may well let her choose another bike from their stock - a sale is a sale but then they could be trying to insert a unlubed finger with their entire stock.

I'd rather lose a deposit than take a dry one up the rear. Thumbs Up

NFW I'd pay £1700 for that, or even half that. It's 12 yrs old and probably wasn't twice that amount new.

I bought a really tatty S-plate Fazer last year for £200, did some work then swapped it for the ZX12R scumbike. The guy I bought it off recently saw it in a shop for £1600! He wasn't very happy but then it was a shed when he sold it.

I reckon that's worth a grand minimum. Full T&T, fuck all miles, good consumables, fairing. All good paintwork.

GS500's are fairly sought after by idiots. I paid £600 for a fairly ratty, fairly high mileage one just because it had t&t.

They make cracking commuters. I reckon you could shift that for £800 with no trouble at all. And with a bit more work £1k easy.

Gaz

£1700 is way too much, tell your friend and let her make her own decision on what to do.

Told her. She seemed pissed off. We haven't spoken since and she's carrying on with the sale.

I feel bad, and I really wish I could of gone with her, cunting dealer sounds like he saw her coming a mile off.

That dealer should be done for robbery of the daylight variety.

The only consolation is that with the mileage being so low she shouldn't have any major problems with it and at least it has some warranty..but £1700..

I sold an ER5 on a 2005 plate with 8000k on it 3 months ago for £1450. I paid £1595 for it only 4 weeks before that from a dealer in the West Midlands.

I looked at it and said £800, and that was before I heard it was up for £1700 in a dealer...

Send her an email linking to this thread. It's not her fault she doesn't know what it should be costing and you're only trting to help.

Holy shit! What a rip off. Its a shame I bet many new bikers get ripped the f*k off due to not having a clue what a particular bike should cost. To compare I paid £1700 for my 2000 ZX6R in mint condition. I know it doesnt always work like that (comparing one type of bike to another) but in this case I honestly wouldnt give more than around £800 for it.

I got ripped off on both my bikes...

£1800 for a cbr125 with 500 miles. I was too blind or stupid to notice the small details that told it had been thrown down the road.

£2995 for the 600, which is a bit more than the average price.
