Hi guys, been chatting to a mate of mine who has just bought a 1986 GSX-R750 for not a lot of money.

Body wise it actually looks pretty good, but it has been sat in a barn for the last 10 years, with a pile of stuff ontop of it. Although the woman did say it ran right up until her husband stored it.

He wants to get it back on the road before the winter, but TBH because its been sat there for so long, he's resigned himself to the fact that it needs a lot of work first.

He's dropped the oil out, and had the fairing/tank off already, and the engine looks very dirty, and the bolts rather rusted.

So, basically, what he wants to know is how much he needs to replace in order to get it back to a really nice looking bike, which runs as it's supposed to...

I can advise him on the bearings/brakes/drivetrain/suspension/etc, but the only engine i've ever stripped is a car one, and to be honest, i havent the foggiest what is going to be needed.

He did say that if he has to strip the block right down, he'll have the engine repainted, and i think he intends to replace all the casing bolts with pro-bolt ones anyway.

Sooooo.... In this case, what is an engine that hasnt run for 10 years, has 48k on the clock, and has probably been ragged likely to need replacing/checking inside?

Thanks for your help - i can see this being a learning experience! Laughing

As with everything old that's been stood for a decade the first thing is to give it a damn good steam cleaning to get off the crap and then carefully strip the bike back to its bits to see what needs to be replaced.

Undoubtedly the pistons will have seized in their bores but with some careful TLC you should be able to get the engine apart. Take time to check all the tolerances and decide what needs to be done, rather than just spending an eternity trying to source parts you don't need to change. If the oil came out clean and didn't have rusted bits of metal in it then you're in with a good chance that the internals are all intact.

I'm not old enough to know much about the pre-slinsghot models but someone on here will.

Make sure you post some pictures and good luck.

Thumbs Up
