my latest project (99 R6) is turning into a night mare so far have found that the front wheel bearings are shot the front tyre is shot and the swing arm bushes are none to clever but is still rideable. what really concerns me is that on my last few runs when the engine warms up (about 90 degrees) it starts to tap my initial thought was the tappets need attention but it seam to be coming from the left hand side of the bike not the top of the engine as i would have expected any ideas would be welcomed cheers mike

Not sure where the cam chain is positioned on a R6. Could be that.

There is nothing of too much excitement on the LHS to be honest (I take it we are talking LHS whilst sitting on the bike not looking at it?).

On the LHS (sitting on it) we have the generator, the gear selector and the output sprocket at the bottom bit. There is also the starter mechanism.

The 90deg bit sounds a bit ominous - first off why is it getting that hot?!!? Thinking and secondly, I wonder if it is summin funny happening/broken in the thermostat area (but that is near the top on the LHS).

Oh and the inner valve springs are notorious for breaking on the 5EBs, what sort of revs is this ticking happening at? .. but again .. we are talking at the top of the motor now Thinking

Silly question, but I have to ask ... what is the oil level like? (I am sure the light would be on if it was even slightly low mind you Wink).

noise is right from tickover the more i listen to it the more convinced i am that it is the tappets might be time to whip off the cover and have a route around with the guages

To be fair, the R6 is a 'bucket and shim' job. Therefore valve clearances CLOSE over time, not open like the old-skool tappets would, and therefore get noisy. So if it IS tapping from the cam area, you are likely to have a 'situation' on your hands Shocked ...

Its a good idea to get in there and check your valve clearances, but I am not sure that is going to reveal your problem in this instance ...

i take it that situation in not a good one and will involve plenty o £ to put right, have just checked my oil ( not been used for two days ) and to me seams very thin. also noticed that the last few time i have used it the clutch does not seam to work (pull it and feels good but put in gear and it either stalls or pulls off) when you first start it but after about 30 sec works fine could this be related

If the bike had been standing ages, the clutch thing is fairly common first time it is reused, but if its happening every time (with regular use) then I'd say summin is a bit iffy there ... the clutch housing is on the RHS, so if the noise is deffo from left, its not from there ... that said, noises can propagate through the engine and be deceptive origin wise.

How thin is the oil? I guess that if the oil is dodgy, then it could be making the clutch stick and if it isn't lubing properly make horrid sounds ... so it could indeed actually all be related to the oil ...

In light of this, I'd change the oil regardless and see if it cures things. Its not going to do any harm if it doesn't do any good!! Wink

If it doesn't sort it, then I'll put my thinking cap back on!! Thumbs Up

Front tyre and bearings is nothing tragic. The noise you hear when its warm sounds like the cam chain. My CBR seems to do the same thing. Its pretty smooth when its cold but when i've been riding it for a while, stop. Then start it up again there is a machine gun rattle. Im pretty sure its the cam chain but it smooths out after a few minutes so i've given up worrying about it.
