Have they got a tiny capacity then? prob need valves checked every 12hours aswell.


Do they run a double bearing on the sproket side? if not I'd expect that would need doing ever 800-1000 miles at least

a forum suggests that the 520 EXC like mine has a capacity of 1.2L? not that small a capacity considering its a narrow engine.

For 100 miles changes I was expecting something like 850ml

1.2 seems bout the norm, but then again most people would do a change after every ride if off roading.

It might be recomended to stick to the very short changes because those engines are a bit fragile


Reading up on the net surgests the lack of cush drive + narrow gears X lots traction from SM wheels = poorly gearbox

I change my oil and air filter clean every 200-300 miles, and oil filters every other.

i guess if its only 1.2L every few hundred miles isnt that bad.
the place i want to take it is about 20 miles away, so i dont really want to reach a service interval halfway through the day.

Basically, yes. However that's probably for serious enduro riding - gentler riding and riding on the street it's reasonable to extend it a decent chunk.

I believe this was mentioned when you were asking what bike to buy .

i know someone said it would be higher maintenance, but i expected it to be oil changes about every 1000 miles as opposed to like 4000 on most bikes.
I need to have it apart because theres a bit of a leak from the rocker cover so ill do clearances and oil then so its fresh.
Its only a weekend fuckabout bike, so im not too worried if i have to service it every month or so. Id just rather know service stuff. This one just seemed a bit unreal so thought id double check.

The leak on the rocker cover will be from the inspection covers, your meant to replace the two gaskets and eight copper crush washers when you check the valves but most people dont bother so the cover and start weaping oil over time.

Yea, sorry I meant as in riding to a trail on knobblies, rather than eeking out every last bit of grip out of a cut slick supermoto tyre, .

i think supermotos are pretty pointless, so it'll stay with the knobblies.
