Hi all,

Just looking for some advice and 'what would happen if...' help with regards to gearing. At the moment, my DRZ400SM is a cracking bike, can barely fault it. One small thing I'd like to change, is it not rev so high when doing 80-90mph, and therefore increase the tank rank from 60mile to a tank when ragging it a bit.

If I add a few teeth to the front sprocket, will this work, or is there the risk the bike won't have the grunt to pull to 90mph, and so just lose all my top end? How many teeth would I need to add to the front for it to make any difference?

Thanks in advance, and karma for helpful answers.

One tooth will do it although two is better for chain/sprocket wear.

Hi

Do you have a dyno graph for it and what the gearbox / primary drive / final drive ratios are?

It will probably pull higher gearing, although you might land up having to change down on any slight hill, but suspect not much higher.

All the best

Keith

I think it would not be better for chain wear and might even be worse. I don't know if anyone would agree with me but there will be fewer more forceful tugs on the chain at a lower rpm, accelerating chain wear. kind of like how a twin is worse than a 4 for chain stretch cos there are less frequent but more powerful pulses.

on my 600 single i can hear the chain sort of slapping to the beat of the engine as it is stretched Smile

I can see your logic there, but I think its accepted that the wear primarily comes from the change of direction of the pins in the chain. i.e. smaller sprocket, the smaller the circumference/diameter, the more each link has to rotate back and then forth on its way round. Also the driving 'load' is spread between fewer links of the chain with a smaller sprocket, increasing the load on each individual link.

As for the OP, I suspect 1 up on the front would be a good move, 2 might be a little OTT. And you should only be doing 70 on the motorway anyway, naughty boy!! Very Happy
