What's the rules on having/using soft-air guns like BB guns around dwellings etc?
I want to make a 'cat deterrent' device to keep a pair of Bengals out of my garden, but not actually hurt the animals, just keep them from attacking my cat. I'm thinking I could make a gun with auto-reload, mount it on my garage with one of my infra-red surveillance cameras as targetting, remote operation by servo and an auto-reload system for bb ammo. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Firstly its pretty obvious thats illegal.. andd secondly wouldn't you get shot at every time you went in the garden? and it'd shoot your own cat? and random birds flying past? would be sooo awesome, i'd send people out in the garden without warning them ____________________ Current Toys: 06 Yamaha WR250F | Nissan 350Z GT | Tech 4 Homes |

I'd hardly be able to shoot myself from inside my garage now would I and I think I'd recognise my own cat?
BB guns are illegal now? First I'd heard of it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Ok that sentry is pretty cool, but way more than I'm looking for. I just want to teach these mogs a non-harmful lesson to keep out of my garden coz the vets bills are getting silly. I thought a BB-style gun would do the job just fine.
I actually did have one of them stroll into my garage a few weeks ago bold as brass. I pushed the door shut and chased it around the garage for a few laps making loud noises by banging on a puffed-up carrier bag until it was truly shitting itself, climbing up the walls and knocking stuff off the shelves etc, then I let it out. Now it only comes in the garden when it can't see me. My garage has no windows etc so they won't see me and I can't see out.
Who knows one day my dog might actually catch one and then I won't have to bother ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Just looked at that Sentry Project site and I see it does mouse aiming as well as autonomous mode. Now I'm getting more enthusiastic, because my PC in the garage has a serial interface for the gun and it's on the network I can VNC to it from anywhere, and use ISPY to view the camera, so theoretically I could manually control the gun from anywhere I can get an internet connection.
Still have no idea on legality. I would have thought that as long as I don't harm the animals and restrict the range of fire to within my garden it should be legal? ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Hmm now that's an idea. I can rig-up a 100psi compressed-air-powered watercannon easily enough. No problem with legality either then.
Nice idea ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Get an RC Ferret and pursue the bastard things around the garden shooting BB's up their arse.
My dog is doing a good job of keeping the local shats out, but they've learnt that he's only out when we're in - consequently i'll often get home to find one of the feline fuckers in my garden. Once i cry havoc and let slip the dog of war, they quickly scarper - one day he'll get one, and i'll laugh!

im thinking of doing the same sort of thing ive got a mini camera on top of a tamyia mini cooper chassis and thats all working fine in terms of i can see where im driving but next step is adding some sort of weapon's pictures later of how far my current project is coming on,
its not much but its still in development plus the cameras are cheap on ebay for the quaility of them, better frps than most webcams and even better than some other cams on the market plus there about the size of 3 pound coins stuck together.

Oh yeah they are deadly. I rescued this wee little kitten just after Christmas - freezing to death on a building site. Two of us cornered it in a small cupboard and I gave the other lad that thermal hat in the pic to put over it's head. He didn't bother and as soon as he got a hand on it the kitten sunk both sets of claws and all it's teeth into his fingers and wouldn't let go ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I see your challenge and I raise you my two bad boi's, one who brings home rabbit's, fights jack russells and vizsla's and is quick as a flash.
The other (the teenage) nutjob who eats bee's for breakfast and takes on fully grown cats without mercy.
Back on topic - just use water, it's far easier/more effective. |

My dream:
(Just shy of) 3 stone of solid muscle ending in powerful crushing jaws seizes cat by its pathetic skull, shakes cat until its spine snaps. Dog's owner then proceeds to stamp bloody remnants of cat into lawn in a victory dance.
Reality:
Cat jumps over back fence, as usual.
What is amusing, is that the 2 houses backing onto mine also have dogs. My dog charges out barking, cat leaps over back fence into garden 1, sounds of barking and snarling and cat scrabbling over fence into garden 2, more sounds of barking and snarling and cat scrabbling over fence into dogless garden. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Scouse: I like the look of the 'siamese' looking one ... looks proper he does. Nice looking mog.
Certainly looks like he would give my Sidney a run for his money.
(but my cats shoulders are fookin huge .. a proper thug he is ... but Daddys boy)
Misxtergixxer: Yeah, a cat will run ... and a dog will kill it if its caught ..... I agree.
But when it has nowhere to run, and cant escape ... then the vets bill at the end for you mutt will stop you encouraging it again.
Cats (like most animals with sharp bits) are mental when cornered.
Mine got trapped by a German Shepperd once .... got badly bitten on the back legs ... poor little moggy ..... Dog lost an eye, and you can still see the scars from the vets attempts to stop the infections and fix the cuts on its face.
The fur still doesnt grow around patches on its neck either.
Having said that .... Dogs are mental too, cos he still wants to get at my Sid ... even after all that damage ... everytime my cat strolls past the gate the dog foams at the mouth ____________________ There's nothing that shouts "Poor Workmanship" more than wrinkles in the Gaffa tape.
