Why is it that on many bikes the ignition advance stops waaay before the redline. It seems to happen on many bikes but an example is my GS400.

Full Advance is at 4000 rpm yet redline is at 10500 rpm.

I cant see how the optimal point of ignition is the same at 4k as it is at 10.5k.

Could it liberate more noticeable more power by extending the advance curve throughout the rev range or at high rpm does the ignition cease to be the limiting factor?

Maybe the "race ignition packs" are simply better mapped out??

I know there are the aftermarket "advancer" that are like an offset ignition rotor but surely this must affect the ignition advance thru the whole rev range thus possibly making starting more difficult?

Cheers Rich

No Worries, we can just strangle our engines with Cat Converters.... Rolling Eyes

Hmm, so with one of the aftermarket "programmable ignition" modules could yield good results if properly set up as an ignition modifier/replacement??

As far as I know a different ignition map will lead to quite big gains but it'd need to be used in conjunction with other things.

Also you'd need to figure out the best ignition advance for your specific engine as all are different, although I imagine you can find a ballpark on the internet somewhere or just get a pre-programmed module.
