If I try to accelerate at anything other than a snails pace in first or second the bike makes a loud clunking noise and it feels like the chain is skipping.

Is it likely to be caused by a lose chain? I'm confised by this 20-30 mm of slack idea as it's very lose when on the sidestand, but totally tight when I sit on the bike and move it aginast the gearbox.
(I know nothing about bike mechanics!) Laughing

It's going in for a service on Thursday but as I ride it to work every day I'ma bit worried it might be something that needs to be sorted straight away?

Bike is SV650S K5 - done nearly 11000 miles

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

it sounds like your front sprocket (behind the left engine casing) is fcuked & the chain is jumping the teeth on it. if left much longer you won't have any drive at all. if they're that bad then you're taking a bit of a chance riding the bike, the chain could snap or come off the front sprocket. have them replaced in the service & i hope you get till thursday outta the bike.

any way I can eaily have a quick look and check if this is the case? Are damaged sprockets obvious in any way or will it likely be covered by the casing?

It's only just (1 month or so) back from being fixted after I was knocked off at a roundabout so I would have thought the insurance company would have noted any other problems?

actually, I'm worried now, just went out for a closer look and the top part of the chain is resting on the swingarm and has dug drooves into it. See these pictures.

What's going on here??

That chain looks a bit of a state. It could well be the chain slapping about if it's too loose or judging by the state of it a tight link.

Try wiggling the links - they should move freely. If the chain has been neglected the links can seize so that they no longer pivot against each other. Judging by that second picture your chain is too loose - it shouldn't be gouging your swingarm.

yeah the chain looks fcuked, when is the last time you put some wax or lube on it? chain & sprockets are consumables like brakes & tyres, once they wear out you have to be replace them but you also need to maintain them otherwise they wear out even quicker. are the teeth on the sprockets sharp to touch & look at the chain adjusters on the swinging arm. does the rear wheel look as if its back as far as it can go? if it is then your chain is stretched & beyond it's wear limit. it wouldn't be an insurance issue as they just compensate for damage caused to bike by their driver.

yeah that's what I suspected lol, is that likely to be catastrophic before Thursday I have to do a 100 mile round trip this evening?

That chain is dead. When was the last time you cleaned and lubed it?

Also the chain isn't digging into the swing arm, that's a protective bit of rubber for protecting the swingarm.

Also, your front and no doubt rear sprockets will be useless as well. THe clunking you can feel is the chain skipping over the peaks of the sprocket.

100 miles? I wouldn't. New chain and sprocket kit. And a maintenance plan!

I say this because my chain and sprockets recently went the same way due to bad maintenance from the previous owner.

Cheers,

Davie.

I fitted a new C&S to my bike yesterday - I'm half tempted to take a photo of the condition of the chain to show you the difference between a healthy chain and a chain that deserves to be on the scrap heap.

Fookin' hell. That chain is shafted. Not only shafted - it's dangerous. Make note of the posts above. You need to learn some basic maintenance.

If you can't be arsed to oil it, get a scottoiler.

+1 That chain is well fucked, show your bike some mechanical sympathy!

I had a new C&S put on my bike last year, and it still looks like new, and I rode my bik all through winter.

Thanks for the shamiing, duly noted and repeated by the mechanic who was amazed I got the bike to the shop! Embarassed

New chain and sprocket, £200, service £100, ripping apart for lack of care on internet forum - priceless ... lol

also turns out the chain was so loose that it was slapping against the back of the engine housing......

Still good as new now - got 11000 miles out of the chain riding 4-5 days a week all year round, whats a normal number to expect?

With care and regular maintenance, on a relatively low powered girls bike ( Mr. Green ) you should be seeing double that.

Cheers

Will a roll of doubled up duck tap lubed with WD-40 not do as a replacement?
