Engine Timing

I have just started doing up a Suzuki GS75, this used be my dads bike and he told me he thinks the engine timings out.
Is there a way of finding out if it is without starting it and risk ruining the engine?
If not does anyone now of a bike garage in the Midlands who i could take it to as i have not been able to find one? Cheers
